Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: Orpheus, 2004 UE, 2019 XS, and 2010 VK139


Background


3361 Orpheus    
Orpheus (1982 HR) was discovered by Carlos Torres at Cerro el Roble in Chile on April 24, 1982.  
Orpheus approaches within 0.039 au in November, 2021 when it
will be a moderately strong radar target at Goldstone with SNRs strong enough
for CW, ranging, and possibly coarse-resolution imaging.  Five tracks are scheduled
between November 11-16 as the asteroid approaches.

Orpheus has a relatively rapid rotation period of 3.5 h (Wisniewski 1991; Polishook et al. 2012).
Its lightcurve amplitude is about 0.25 mag, implying
a shape with relatively low elongation.  Many NEAs with periods of less than four hours
are binaries but it is not known if Orpheus has a satellite.  

Mainzer et al. (2011) used WISE spacecraft observations 
to estimate a diameter of 350 m and an unusually bright optical albedo of 0.36.
One of our principal goals is to use Goldstone radar observations to constrain the diameter
to help calibrate the diameter estimated from the WISE data.

Two distinctly different spectral types have been reported for this object:
V by Wisniewski (1991) and Q by DeMeo et al. (2014).  All the V-class NEAs
observed by radar to date have high circular polarization ratios, but most
Q-class NEAs do not, although the high end of the Q-class and low end of the V-class
SC/OC distributions barely overlap.  Weak Goldstone CW observations obtained in 2017 
yielded SC/OC ~0.6, which is more consistent with a V-type object than with a Q-type, but the
result is somewhat ambiguous.  Our hope is that new
Goldstone observations in 2021 at much stronger SNRs will clarify the spectral class.

The Yarkovsky effect has been detected in optical astrometry reported for Orpheus.
The Yarkovsky effect is a non-gravitational perturbation
that can change NEA orbits due to absorption of sunlight and reemission of heat, and
estimation of its magnitude helps constrain an asteroid's mass and bulk density.
Radar ranging observations in 2021 could increase the SNR of the Yarkovsky effect
detection substantially and provide a more precise estimate of the asteroid's mass. 

Orpheus is on the NHATS list and has been considered as a possible spacecraft target, 
although no missions are currently scheduled to visit it.


2004 UE
2004 UE will approach within 0.0285 au (~33 lunar distances) on November 13.
It was discovered by LINEAR in October 2004.  

This asteroid has an absolute magnitude of 21.5 that suggests a diameter within a factor of two 
of 160 m.  Lightcurves obtained by Gandolfi et al. 2009 give a rotation period of 5.6 h
and an amplitude of 1 mag, which implies a very elongated shape.   Consequently,
the echo bandwidths could vary by close to a factor of about two as this asteroid spins.

2004 UE will be a moderately strong radar target with SNRs sufficient for CW,
ranging, and probably coarse-resolution imaging.  Three tracks are scheduled at 
Goldstone and the one on Nov. 11 partially overlaps time scheduled for 3361 Orpheus.



2019 XS
2019 XS was discovered on December 2, 2019 by the Mt. Lemmon Survey. This asteroid
will approach within 1.6 lunar distances on November 9 and the view periods overlap
time scheduled at Goldstone on November 11, 13, and 14 for observations of Orpheus
and 2004 UE.

Virtually nothing is known about its physical properties other than its absolute 
magnitude of 23.7, which suggests a diameter within a factor of two of 60 meters.

This will be a strong radar target on November 11 but the SNRs will decrease
rapidly afterward as the distance increases.

This object is on NASA's NHATS list of possible mission-accessible targets. 


2010 VK139
2010 VK139 was discovered in November, 2010 by the Catalina Sky Survey.
Although observed for only four days at the time of its discovery, the rotation
period, diameter, and optical albedo have all been estimated.  P. Birtwhistle
obtained an extremely fast rotation period of 1.8 minutes (0.03 hours) and a 
lightcurve amplitude of 0.5 magnitudes, which probably indicates a shape with
significant elongation.  NASA's WISE spacecraft observed 2010 VK139 and
Mainzer et al. (2014) estimated a diameter of 55 meters and an optical albedo
of about 0.2.  This is among the smallest near-Earth asteroids observed by WISE.

Due to the very short optical arc, the orbit has considerable uncertainties so 
astrometry would be greatly appreciated.

Setups


2004 UE: The bandwidth could be about 3 Hz for an equatorial view, but the SNRs will
be weak, so we're going to start with a 1 Hz setup with the hope of seeing an echo quickly.

Orpheus: we are expecting a bandwidth if about 8 Hz, so we're going to start with a setup
that should produce a quick detection and resolve the echo in Doppler frequency.

2019 XS
The rotation period is unknown so we'll going to start with a 2-Hz setup with 
the hope that it will reveal an echo quickly.


2010 VK139
Due to the very rapid rotation period, we are expecting a bandwidth of about 180 Hz.
We're going to adopt an unusually coarse resolution of 50 Hz to boost chances of
seeing an echo quickly.
