(1036) Ganymed Goldstone Radar Observations Planning
(1036) Ganymed was discovered on October 23, 1924 by Walter Baade at Hamburg-Bergedorf Observatory (Germany). With a diameter of nearly 40 km, Ganymed is the largest near-Earth asteroid. It is an S-class object and was observed at Arecibo by Ostro et al. in 1985 and 1998. Weak radar images of Ganymed were obtained in 1998 and show an elongated object. Ganymed has radar albedo of 0.11 (Ostro et al., unpublished) and an optical albedo of 0.17 (Veeder et al., 1989). Kaasalainen et al. (2001) inverted lightcurves and obtained a preliminary shape model and a pole direction with ecliptic ecliptic longitude and latitude λ=208 deg, β=-76 deg. Ganymed will approach within 0.36 AU in mid-October, 2011, when it will be strong enough at Goldstone for CW observations and perhaps ranging observations. Ganymed will be an imaging target at Arecibo. Three tracks are scheduled at Goldstone on October 11, 12, and 13. Arecibo tracks have been requested on October 16-19. The subradar latitude will be ~35 deg at the time of our observations at Goldstone. 2011 is the best opportunity for radar observations of Ganymed until 2024.

We are expecting a bandwidth of about 300-400 Hz, so we will use much coarser frequency resolution than we have for most other near-Earth objects. Ganymed is elongated, and the subradar latitude will be about 35 degrees off the equator, so the bandwidth will vary substantially as the asteroid rotates. This will be a primarily CW experiment at Goldstone, although we hope to obtain coarse-resolution ranging as well. Ganymed will not be strong enough for detailed imaging at Goldstone.
