Goldstone and Arecibo Radar Observations Planning: Galileans during 2015 opposition of Jupiter
This is a planning page for radar observations of the Galilean satelites. Our objective is to use radar ranging measurements of the Galilean satellites in order to detect orbital changes due to their tidal interaction with Jupiter. The round-trip-time (RTT) to Jupiter is ~74 min at the time of our observations (around jovian opposition). Most of the Goldstone monostatic tracks and Goldstone-GBT bistatic tracks are at least 5 hours long, so we will be able to detect more than one satellite. The Arecibo tracks are limited by the declination window, so we will only detect one satellite each track. We have eleven tracks scheduled at Goldstone, of which eight are bistatic with GBT. We have eleven tracks scheduled at Arecibo. Jupiter is a strong radio source, so we have scheduled times when the satellites will be at their maximum angular separation from the planet, a geometry that minimizes Jovian noise. The previous observations by Ostro et al. (1992) demonstrate that this approach works and that the noise from the planet will not be a problem.
Physical properties of the Galilean satellites and their respective X- and S- Doppler bandwidths. The SNRs are calculated based on the physical characteristics of the Galilean satellites. Assumed Goldstone Ptx=440 kW and Tsys=18K. Assumed Arecibo Ptx=900 kW and Tsys=23 K. Bistatic tracks with DSS-14 transmitting and Green Bank Telescope (GBT) receiving will increase the SNRs by 3-fold with respect to monostatic DSS-14 runs. These SNRs are valid plus/minus 3 weeks from the of opposition of Jupiter on Feb 6, 2015. NOTE: PRDX files have been generated for the sub-Earth points of Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. The sub-radar point remains with 0.3 degrees of the body equator for all of them and, aside from Europa, their triaxial radii vary by ~100 meters (very spherical). The IAU equatorial radius was used as a constant to determine the leading bounce-point. How to read PRDX file names (notes from J. Giorgini): For example 14v-14-14: * The first number (14) in the file name is the transmitter site code (DSS-14): who the transmitter section of the predicts is designed to be read by (the PO). It can have a 'v' or an 'f' after it: 'f' means fixed transmit (reference) frequency 'v' means variable transmit frequency ("Doppler"). If 'v', it means the transmit predicts are linked to the second number, which is the site code to whom transmitter is uplinking Doppler (the "primary receiver") * The second number is the "primary receiver" introduced above. If a 'v' case (Doppler uplink by the transmitter), this second number is the site for whom the transmission is designed so as to receive at the fixed reference frequency. If instead an 'f' case, this primary receiver number is optional since it has no affect on the transmission. * The third number is the "secondary receiver", a receiver listening to the signal defined by the first number pair. It is who the RCVR section of the predicts file is for. The secondary receiver CAN be the same as primary receiver. Or it can be different, if "listening in" on action between two other sites.
