Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: Asteroids 2018 EJ4 and 2015 DP155


Background

2018 EJ4 
2018 EJ4 was discovered by the Mt. Lemmon Survey on March 13, 2018.  It will make a
close approach to Earth on June 10, 2018 within about 6 lunar distances.  It has an
absolute magnitude of 21.3 that suggests a diameter within a factor of two of 0.17 km.
Brian Warner has reported a preliminary rotation period of 7.5 hours and a lightcurve
amplitude of about 0.4 mag.

The Minor Planet Center has classified 2018 EJ4 as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid."



2015 DP155
2015 DP155 was discovered by Pan-STARRS 1 on February 17, 2015.  It is an Amor-type
Potentially Hazardous Asteroid and makes a close approach to Earth on June 11, 2018
within about 9 lunar distances.  

The asteroid was detected by NEOWISE and Joe Masiero reports a diameter between 100-200 meters.
Brian Warner reported a preliminary spin period of
3.1 hours and a large lightcurve amplitude of 1 mag that suggests an elongated shape.

Setups



2018 EJ4: Given its 7.5 h period an our guess of about 0.17 km for the diameter, the bandwidth
could be about 2 Hz for an equatorial view.  Unless this object is much larger than expected, 
the bandwidth should be relatively narrow.  The uncertainties are large enough that we should
see a Doppler correction to the ephemeris during the first track. 

2015 DP155: We are expecting a bandwidth of 3-7 Hz for DP155.  The orbit has small uncertainties
in Doppler frequency, so we don't expect to see a Doppler correction, but there should be an obvious
correction in time delay.
