Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: 2012 TC4
2012 TC4 was discovered by Pan-STARRS 1 on October 4, 2012. This object was tracked for about seven days during its discovery apparition but has not been seen since. It will approach very closely on Oct. 12, 2017. The nominal close approach distance with the most recent orbit, solution 26, is 14 Earth radii (0.23 lunar distances), but the 3-sigma close approach distance could also be as large as 0.6 lunar distances (36 Earth radii) or as little as 2.0 Earth radii. As the orbit has improved due to remeasurements of astrometry obtained in 2012 using updated star catalogs, the nominal close approach distance has increased from 2.3 Earth radii with solution 22, to 9.2 Earth radii with solution 25, and then to 14 Earth radii with solution 26. J. Briggs, P. Wiggins, R. Miles, A. Carbognani, W. Ryan, and P. Bacci (pers. comm.) have reported a rotation period of 0.2 h and a large lightcurve amplitude of about 1.3 magnitudes. This indicates that 2012 TC4 is an elongated and rapidly rotating object. In addition, a second period is present in Bill Ryan's lightcurves that suggests non-principal axis rotation (i.e., tumbling). Its absolute magnitude of 26.7 suggests a diameter within a factor of two of 15 meters. The spectral class is unknown. 2012 TC4 should be detectable at Goldstone from about Oct. 9 - 16, but probably not at the moment of closest approach, when it is likely to be too far south for Goldstone to track. We plan to observe this object with radar at Goldstone on several dates straddling the close approach. A preliminary schedule is available: Oct 9, 10, 11, and 14. Additional time on Oct. 12 may be added once the rise/set times have been updated in early August. The solution 26 trajectory suggests that radar observations at Arecibo will be possible starting on Oct. 13. We may also plan radar speckle observations once the orbit improves after the recovery. The time of closest approach using Solution 26 is 1.4 h later than with solution 25 and 4.0 h later than with solution 22. The solution 26 trajectory suggests that 2012 TC4 will be visible at Goldstone longer on Oct. 12 than we previously thought, although at a somewhat greater distance than indicated by solution 25, with correspondingly lower SNRs. The solution 26 time of closest approach has a 3-sigma uncertainty of 123 minutes, so the close approach distance and its timing could still change substantially. The close approach has generated some buzz on the internet but the chance of an impact in 2017 is zero. NASA issued a press release about 2012 TC4 on July 12, 2017: https://cneos.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news197.html NASA posted another release about 2012 TC4 on July 28, 2017: https://www.nasa.gov/feature/jpl/asteroid-flyby-will-benefit-nasa-detection-and-tracking-network The University of Maryland has posted a website to help coordinate observations during the 2017 encounter: http://2012tc4.astro.umd.edu/index.shtml This object is on NASA's NHATS list of potential mission targets, although no actual mission to this asteroid is currently under consideration.

The solution 26 ground track will pass over southern Australia. The solution 22 trajectory suggested that the asteroid would approach within 2.3 Earth radii, and if so, that could change the asteroid's spin state, rearrange material on its surface, and possibly change the shape if the interior is a rubble pile with very low cohesive strength. Later orbital solutions have moved the nominal close approach distance 6.2x farther away, suggesting that spin and shape changes are much less likely. However, the solution #26 uncertainties are still sufficiently large that we cannot rule out a flyby at 2 Earth radii and thus spin and shape changes. This situation should be clarified once the asteroid is observed again in August, 2017. If the nominal solution 26 prediction for the asteroid's trajectory is close to correct, then the close approach will bend the asteroid's trajectory due to Earth's gravity, and the asteroid's heliocentric orbit will change. The semimajor axis will increase, the eccentricity will decrease, the inclination will increase, and the orbital period will lengthen. The figures below illustrate orbital changes that could have occurred after the 2012 flyby and that are predicted after the 2017 flyby. The details of the post-2017 flyby will probably change as new astrometry improves the orbit in August 2017. The orbital elements listed above were estimated from an arc that extends from 2012 Oct. 4.468-11.748 and thus does not include any observations after the 2012 flyby, which changed the orbit significantly. Osculating heliocentric orbital elements after 2012 but before the 2017 flyby are in the realm of a = 1.406 au, e = 0.306, and i = 8.6 deg. Between 2012 and 2017, TC4 was briefly in a 3:5 mean motion resonance with Earth. ** SOLUTION 26 UPDATE ** The nominal JPL/Horizons solution 26 close approach is at 14 Earth radii and it occurs 1.4 hours later than the approach indicated by solution 25. Additional changes are still very likely when this object is recovered. Solution 25 indicated an earlier radar opportunity at Goldstone than was previously possible and this is still true with solution 26, but the peak SNRs are only about 1/3 as strong. Solution 26 suggests that radar observations at Arecibo will be possible starting on October 13. Unfortunately, the new rise/set times eliminate the Oct. 12 Arecibo track that was possible with solution 25, so bistatic DSS13/Arecibo 1.9 m resolution imaging is no longer feasible. If the solution 26 flyby distance of 14 Earth radii is close to correct, then it seems very unlikely that changes to the spin state will occur and be observable. ** SOLUTION 25 UPDATE ** [We retain text applicable to solution 25 mostly for historical context--note that it is now obsolete.] The JPL/Horizons solution 25 nominal approach is at 9.2 Earth radii and it occurs 2.6 h later than the approach given by solution 22. The uncertainty in the time of closest approach using solution 25 is 170 minutes (3-sigma) so additional changes are very likely when this object is recovered, which could occur by late July 2017. If the approach is actually at about 9.2 Earth radii, then spin state changes might still happen but their probability is signifciantly lower. Trajectory bending during the flyby will be less than with solution 22, and although the post-flyby heliocentric orbital elements will change, the magnitude of the change will be less than shown in the orbital element figure. The new trajectory brings 2012 TC4 into Arecibo's declination window and suggests that radar observations there could start on October 12. The solution 25 trajectory suggests that 2012 TC4 will move north into the beam at Goldstone earlier on October 12 than we previously thought based on solution 22. The SNRs will be much stronger and could provide an opportunity for DSS-13/Green Bank and DSS-13/Arecibo 1.875 m bistatic imaging. Whether this is actually possible might not be known definitively until TC4 is recovered in July or August 2017. Last update: 2017 August 4

2012 TC4's heliocentric orbit shown before the 2012 Earth flyby (blue), after the 2012 flyby but before the 2017 flyby (purple), and after the 2017 flyby (yellow). The 2012 and 2017 flybys produce pronounced changes to the heliocentric orbit. The motion shown extends from June 2010 to October 2019. Computed using Solution 22.
Heliocentric semimajor axis, eccentricity, and inclination from January 1, 2012-January 1, 2019. The sharp changes in 2012 and 2017 occurred during close Earth flybys. Substantial orbital changes on such short time scales are unusual and highlight the need to monitor the orbit of this object whenever possible. Computed using Solution 22.

2012 TC4's ground track (shown in red) before, during, and after the time of closest approach (shown in white), which occurs just off the coast of Antarctica. The portion of the ground track shown here starts over South America, crosses Antarctica, and then goes north over the Indian Ocean and India. The southernmost point on the ground track is at a latitude of -84 degrees. Shaded regions on the left correspond to areas where the Sun is below the horizon. 2012 TC4 could be observed with ground-based optical telescopes in South America and southern Africa but the asteroid cannot be observed at the moment of closest approach because it occurs in daylight. The distances in the table above appear to be the same due to round off. Note that the solution 26 rise/set times after Oct. 11 changed by about an hour. The shift also wiped out one possible bistatic track with Arecibo on Oct. 12 when the SNRs would have been strong enough for 1.9 m imaging using DSS-13 to transmit. Solution 26 lengthened the Goldstone view period during the first track on Oct. 12 by about an hour. There may be an attempt to observe 2012 TC4 with radar in Australia around the time of the closest approach. This is in the early stages of planning and details are not yet available. On Oct. 10 and 13 the RTT is so short that monostatic observations would barely resolve the asteroid in Doppler frequency. CW, orbit improvement, possibly imaging Oct 11: Bistatic DSS-14/GBT: 40 MHz imaging to establish the spin state and resolve the object. Orbital updates could eliminate this observing window if the rise/set times change by > 2 h, which is possible. Oct 12b: Bistatic DSS-13/Green Bank 80 MHz imaging. See details on the object, check for spin state changes. Bistatic DSS-14/DSS-13 40 MHz imaging Oct 13: Monostatic DSS-14:CW and to update the orbit. Could be corrections after the close flyby. Bistatic DSS-14/Green Bank or DSS-14/Arecibo 40 MHz imaging to look for spin state changes. Crucial to have GBT or Arecibo. Oct 14: Monostatic DSS-14: CW and orbit updates. Bistatic DSS-14/Arecibo: check for spin state changes if SNRs seem sufficiently strong. Arecibo monostatic could also do this. The observing windows on Oct. 9, 10, and 11 are unlikely to change by more than minutes even after the asteroid is recovered in late July or early August so the tracks scheduled below will probably remain the same. The 1st observing window on Oct. 12 could change substantially depending on the updated close approach time. As a result, the SNRs on Oct. 11 will increase by a factor of 4 from the beginning to the end of the window but on Oct. 12-13 they will decrease by a factor of 31. Radar facilities in Europe will be able to track 2012 TC4 on Oct. 12 at a closer distance than is possible from California, and in principle, this object could be detected using DSS-63 in Spain to transmit 20 kW or 40 kW if another antenna at a similar longitude could be scheduled to receive. This object could also be detected by the TIRA facility near Bonn, Germany, and by EISCAT near Stromso, Norway. It may also detectable at Haystack in Massachusetts. Arecibo SNRs The solution 22 trajectory suggested that 2012 TC4 would not be observable at Arecibo. Solutions 25 and 26 suggest that radar observations at Arecibo could occur after the closest approach. Setups
This object is a rapid rotator with a period of about 0.2 hours. Its diameter is unknown but is probably within a factor of two of 20 meters. If we assume P = 0.2 h and D = 0.02 km, then we could see a bandwidth of about 10 Hz. Due to the rapid rotation and our guess about its size, the bandwidth should change rapidly as we observe it with radar. We're going to start with a CW setup that has coarse resolution due to the wide bandwdidth we expect: CW setup: --------------------------------------------------------------------------- TX polarization RCP RCV polarization LCP & RCP Frequency hops: no hopping Bandwidth: 5000 Hz TXoffset +500 Hz FFT for PFS files: 5000 for 1 Hz resolution Ranging setups: --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10-usec baud 10 usec code 127 PRP 1270 usec FFT 64 ncoh 1 bandwidth 787 Hz resolution 12.3 Hz TXOFF +100 Hz (col 41) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11-usec baud 11 usec code 127 PRP 1397 usec FFT 64 ncoh 1 bandwidth 716 Hz resolution 11.8 Hz TXOFF +100 Hz (col 41) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1-usec baud 1 usec code 255 FFT 128 ncoh 16 bandwidth 245 Hz resolution 1.91 Hz TXOFF +50 Hz (echo in col 91) ---------------------------------------------------------------------
