Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: 2012 BA35, 2021 PP, and 2021 PJ1


Background


2012 BA35    
2012 BA35 is an object in the realm of 60 meters in diameter that will approach within 
7 lunar distances (0.018 au) on 2021 August 11.  Nothing else is known about its physical
properties.  

This asteroid was discovered by Pan-STARRS 1 in January, 2012. 

We expect signal-to-noise ratios strong enough for CW and ranging echoes
but probably not strong enough for delay-Doppler imaging.

Update on August 9: Radar echoes obtained on August 8 hint that the 
the rotation period is between 2-4 hours.

2012 BA35 has an orbit similar to Earth's and is on the NHATS list of 
mission-accessible targets.  


2021 PP
2021 PP was discovered on August 3, 2021 by ATLAS-Mauna Loa.  This object is roughly 50 meters
in diameter and will approach within 4 lunar distances on August 8, when it will be a strong
radar target suitable for high-resolution delay-Doppler imaging.  

The August 8 view period overlaps the first track on that date
scheduled for 2012 BA35 and we may devote the time to 2021 PP instead, which could be a significantly
stronger target.  

Other than its absolute magnitude of 24.1, nothing else is known about the physical properties
of this object.

2021 PP is on the NHATS list of potentially mission-accessible targets.


2021 PJ1
2021 PJ1 will approach within 4.3 lunar distances (0.011 au) on August 15.  This asteroid
has an absolute magnitude of 26.0, suggesting a diameter of about 22 meters, and it was 
discovered on August 4 by Pan-STARRS 1.  Nothing else is known about its physical properties.

The view periods overlap time already scheduled for 2012 BA35 on August 13-14 and we may 
devote some of the time to observe PJ1 instead.

2021 PJ1 is on the NHATS list of potentially mission-accessible targets.
