Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: Asteroids 2017 YE5, 1996 AW1, 2010 NY65, and 2018 LK

Background

2017 YE5
2017 YE5 was discovered in December 2017.  In an earlier version of this planning page, 
we posted that the asteroid was found by the Morocco Oukaimeden Sky Survey (J43) on December 21, 2017,
but it turns out that the Mt. Lemmon Survey actually reported observations on December 14, so that 
telescope will probably be credited with the discovery when this asteroid ultimately receives a number.  
We did not realize this until after the radar observations concluded in July, 2018.
This asteroid will approach Earth within 0.04 au on June 21. The orbit of 2017 YE5 has a Tisserand parameter
of 2.875, which is cometary and hints that the object could be an extinct Jupiter-family comet. During the interval for
which we have an reliable orbital predictions, 1908-2189 (JPL orbital solution 20), this object approaches within 0.8 au 
of Jupiter. June 21 encounter with Earth is the closest in this time interval.

Many NEAs with cometary Tisserand parameters and semimajor axes so distant have been optically dark,
so we suspect that will also be true with 2017 YE5.
If we assume a dark optical albedo of pv=0.05, then 2017 YE5 could be ~860 m in diameter. 
2017 YE5 will be an excellent target at Arecibo and a moderately strong target at Goldstone.
Observations at Arecibo could yield images with a resolution of 7.5 m/pixel.  At Goldstone,
1/4 usec may be possible. 

As of May 10, 3-sigma solution 21 pointing uncertainites are ~200 arcsec during the closest approach, so more astrometry is
needed in time for radar observations.  Optical observers should be able to observe this object
in the first three weeks of May, when it is still about 50 deg from the Sun, has a visual magnitude of ~21, and
the pointing uncertianities are only a few arcseconds. 

2017 YE5 will also move far enough from the Sun during the 3rd week of June for additional astroemtry.
At that time, it should brighten to about 15th magnitude.

Observations are scheduled at Goldstone on six dates between June 17-24  during time scheduled for 
2015 DP155 and 2010 NY65. 
2017 YE5 is visible from Arecibo only from June 22-26 and observations are scheduled on June 23 and 24.

2017 YE5 has been classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the Minor Planet Center.


(467309) 1996 AW1
1996 AW1 was discovered by Spacewatch on Jan 14 1996. We do not know anything about this object except that
its absolute magnitude of 20.0 suggest a diameter of ~300 m (within a factor of two). 1996 AW1 will approach Earth
at 0.046 au, its closest encounter with Earth until 2153.

This asteroid will be a weak target at Goldstone and moderately strong at Arecibo.
We can expect CW data from Goldstone and CW, ranging, and coarse-resolution imaging data from Arecibo.
One track is scheduled at Goldstone and two tracks are scheduled at Arecibo.

This asteroid is a good optical target starting in early June when it becomes brighter than 17th magnitude.

Update: Brian Warner reports a rotation period of 10.8 hours and a large lightcurve amplitude of 1.25 magnitudes,
suggesting an elongated shape.  

1996 AW1 has been classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the Minor Planet Center.


(441987) 2010 NY65
2010 NY65 was discovered on July 10, 2010 by NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) 
spacecraft.  This asteroid makes yearly close approaches to Earth from 2015 to 2022
that make it an excellent candidate for detecting the Yarkovsky effect if radar ranging measurements
occur over multiple close encounters spanning at least several years.  If successful, detection
of the orbital drift due to the Yarkovsky effect can yield constraints on the asteroid's mass.

The 2018 approach within 0.019 au on June 24 is the closest in the 2015-2022 interval.

This asteroid is in a horseshoe resonant orbit with Earth,  and after 2022, the next time it will make close approaches
is in 2179-2184.  The asteroid will switch between libration and circulation during the close approaches
late in the next century.  The animation below visualizes the asteroid's horsehoe behavior. 

Mainzer et al (2011) estimated a diameter of 0.23 km and an optical albedo of 7% based on
thermal modeling of WISE mission data.  Arecibo delay-Doppler images with 7.5 m resolution obtained in 2017 
show a visible extent of 0.12 km. Given that only part of the survace is visible to radar, this visible
extent, coupled with the irregular shape evident in the Arecibo images, suggests a size that is
consistent with the diameter estimated by Mainzer et al. 
The Asteroid Lightcurve Database (http://www.MinorPlanet.info/lightcurvedatabase.html, Warner et al., 2009,
2018 March 7 update) lists a rotation period of 4.973 h.

2010 NY65 will be relatively strong target at Goldstone.  
The SNRs at Arecibo will be excellent and it should be possible to obtain images with 7.5 m resolution. 
Five tracks are scheduled at Goldstone and several tracks have been scheduled at Arecibo. 

2010 NY65 has been classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the Minor Planet Center.


2018 LK
2018 LK was discovered on 2018 June 4 by the ATLAS telescope on Mauna Loa, Hawaii.  Little is known about 
this object other than its absolute magnitude of 21.8, which suggests a diameter within a factor of two of
140 meters.

The closest approach is on June 15 at a distance of 0.016 au. 

This object will be visible at Goldstone during time previously scheduled for observations of 2015 DP155 
on June 11 and 17, with SNRs weak on the first day and several times stronger on the second. 

The Minor Planet Center has classified 2018 LK as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid."
