Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: Asteroids 2007 AG, 2008 WM64, 2017 QL33, 2017 VT14, 2017 WX12, and 2017 WZ14
Delay-Doppler images of 2017 VT14 obtained on December 14, 2017. The resolution is 18.75 m x 0.24 Hz. Range increases down and Doppler frequency increases to the right. Time increases from left to right and top to bottom. The asteroid is elongated and somewhat angular and completes roughly 3/4 of one rotation during the sequence shown.
Delay-Doppler images of 2017 WX12 obtained on December 22, 2017. The resolution is 7.5 m x 0.043 Hz. Range increases down and Doppler frequency increases to the right. Time increases from left to right and top to bottom. The asteroid appears rounded in the beginning of the sequence but increasing angular and asymmetric at the end. The amount of rotation evident in the images is consistent with the 16.4 h rotation period estimated by Petr Pravec (pers. comm.).
This is a website that describes plans for Goldstone radar observations of six near-Earth asteroids in December, 2017. 2007 AG, 2008 WM64, and 2017 QL33 were discovered by the Mt. Lemmon Survey and very little is known about them. All are classified as "Potentially Hazardous Asteroids" by the Minor Planet Center. 2008 WM64 This object is roughly 200 meters in diameter and it will approach within 0.04 au on December 22 when it will be a moderately strong radar target at Goldstone. Its rotation period and spectral class are unknown. Using reasonable assumptions for its properties, we estimate that the SNRs will yield a detection quickly but that they probably won't be strong enough for detailed delay-Doppler imaging. 2008 WM64 will reach 15th magnitude in the third week of December when it will be a good target for lightcurve observations and vis-IR spectroscopy. Update on Dec. 21: Basil Rowe has obtained lightcurves with an amplitude of 0.69 mag and a rotation period of 2.4 h. The amplitude strongly suggests a very elongated shape, so we should see substantial bandwidth variations. Radar echoes were obtained at Arecibo on Dec. 21 that have a bandwdith of about 2.2 Hz. Combined with the rotation period of 2.4 h, this places a lower bound on the maximum pole-on extent of about 0.19 km. 2007 AG 2007 AG will approach within 0.059 au on December 26. We are expecting weak SNRs but it should still be detectable at Goldstone. This object is roughly 300 meters in diameter. The view periods overlap those for 2017 QL33 and we plan to observe both objects, devoting the bulk of the time to the one that provides stronger SNRs and more interesting results. 2017 QL33 2017 QL33 was discovered in August 2017 and it will approach within 0.034 au on Dec. 30. We anticipate that the SNRs will be strong enough for ranging and perhaps coarse-resolution imaging. View periods for this asteroid overlap two of the 2008 WM64 tracks and all three 2007 AG tracks. 2017 VT14 2017 VT14 was discovered by the NEOWISE spacecraft on 2017 Nov. 13. J. Masiero reports that NEOWISE data suggest a diameter of about 200 meters, that, given an absolute magnitude of 22.7, implies that this object is optically dark with an optical albedo of perhaps only a few percent. Although a 3D model is not yet available, the dimensions of the asteroid evident in the Goldstone delay-Doppler images are consistent with a diameter of about 200 meters. After the radar observations concluded, Petr Pravec reported a rotation period of 4.040 +- 0.004 h that is in agreement with the rotation evident in the Goldstone radar images. 2017 WX12 2017 WZ14
