Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: 2008 HS3, 2018 VX8, and 68950 2002 QF15


Background



2008 HS3
Potentially Hazardous Asteroid 2008 HS3 was discovered on 2008 April 30 by the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona.
This asteroid has an absolute magnitude of 21.7 that suggests a diameter
within a factor of two of 150 meters. No other physical properties are known. 

2008 HS3 will approach within 0.037 au (~14.5 lunar distances) on May 9. We are expecting weak SNRs at Goldstone,
but they should be strong enough for CW observations.  The SNRs at Arecibo should be strong 
enough for delay-Doppler imaging.

We have two tracks scheduled at Goldstone on DOYs 131 and 132 (May 11 and 12).  
Observations at Arecibo are scheduled on May 16 and 17.

2008 HF3 becomes brighter than 18th magnitude in the second half of April.

This asteroid is on the NHATS list of potential mission targets.


2018 VX8 
2018 VX8 was discovered on 2018 November 10 by Pan-STARRS 2 at Haleakala.
This asteroid has an absolute magnitude of 22.4 that suggests a diameter
within a factor of two of 100 meters. No other physical properties are known at this time. 

2018 VX8 will approach within 0.0158 au (~6.1 lunar distances) on May 12. We are expecting moderate SNRs at Goldstone,
so we to do CW and possibly ranging observations.  2018 VX8 is an excellent radar target at Arecibo
and the SNRs should be strong enough for 7.5 m delay-Doppler imaging.

Two tracks are scheduled at Goldstone on DOYs 130 and 132 (May 10 and 12).  
This object is not scheduled at Arecibo.

Pointing uncertainties for this object are now small enough to support the radar observations.


68950 2002 QF15 
Potentially Hazardous Asteroid 68950 2002 QF15 was discovered on 2002 August 27 by the Lincon Laboratory LINEAR project
in Socorro, New Mexico. Precovery observations of this object were dicovered during the Digitized Sky Survey program
on the photographic plates obtained at Palomar in 1955.
  
This asteroid has an absolute magnitude of 16.4. The NEOWISE team (Nugent et al., 2016; Masiero et al., 2017) reported diameter
estimates from two observing epochs which suggest that the asteroid has a moderate elongation, which is consistent with
lightcurves that show an amplitude of 0.35 mag (B. Warner, LCDB). This asteroid is a slow rotator with a period of 47 hours.
2002 QF15 has been observed by radar in 2003, 2006, and 2016 and yielded images that confirm the elongated shape and slow rotation.. 
The circular polarization ratio is ~0.2, which is somewhat less than the average among ratios reported for 200+ NEAs 
reported by Benner et al. (2008) and a value similar to that of 101955 Bennu (Nolan et al. 2013).

2002 QF15 will approach within 0.088 au (34 lunar distances) on May 20, its best radar apparition to date.
We are expecting moderate SNRs at Goldstone, sufficient for CW and ranging.  The SNRs at Arecibo should be strong 
enough for delay-Doppler imaging with at least 75 m resolution.

Eight tracks are scheduled at Goldstone between May 16-27 and six tracks are scheduled at Arecibo from May 20-25.

2002 QF15 will be a bright optical target will reaches 14th magnitude in the last week of May.
