2008 EV5 Goldstone Radar Observations Planning
The 2008 EV5 Goldstone observations are dedicated to the memory of Steve Ostro, who died early on the morning of December 15. He was a uniquely gifted man of enormous energy, intensity, passion, insight, and intellect; a very warm person; and a close friend. We will miss him enormously. 2008 EV5 was discovered by the Mt. Lemmon Survey on March 4, 2008. It will approach within 0.0216 AU (8.4 lunar distances) on December 23 when it will be a strong radar target at Goldstone. The absolute magnitude of 20.0 suggests a diameter within a factor of two of 320 meters; otherwise nothing is known about its physical properties. Goldstone observations are scheduled on December 16-23. Arecibo observations are scheduled on December 22-24 and 27. This object will brighten to about 13th magnitude around Christmas and it will be an excellent target for photometric and spectroscopic observations. 2008 EV5 has been classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the Minor Planet Center. We want to thank Rob McNaught at Siding Spring Observatory (Australia) for obtaining astrometry to support radar observations of this object.
