Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: (456537) 2007 BG, 1999 RM45, and 2015 BY310
1999 RM45 1999 RM45 was discovered on September 14, 1999 at the Lincoln Laboratory ETS (LINEAR) in New Mexico. Spitzer "ExploreNEOs" observations from 2009 suggest that the object is 0.315 km +0.126 -0.064 km in diameter, corresponding to an optical albedo of ~0.24. In Feb. 2021, Pravec et al. reported that 1999 RM45 is a binary system with a primary rotation period of 3.07 h and a secondary orbital period of 16.445 h. The lightcurve amplitude of only 0.07 mag for the primary indicates a shape with a low elongation and the depth of the dip during eclipses and occultations suggests a diameter ratio Dsecondary/Dprimary of about 0.45. Due to the estimated diameters and rotation period, we are expecting a bandwidth of about 10 Hz for the primary and about 1 Hz for the secondary. 1999 RM45 will approach within 0.020 au, or ~7.8 lunar distances, on March 2, 2021 when it will be an excellent target for high-resolution radar imaging. Goldstone observations are scheduled on six tracks from Feb. 27 - Mar. 7. Radar observations are also scheduled on March 1 and 2 at Canberra using DSS-36 and DSS-34 to transmit 7190 MHz and the ATCA to receive. 1999 RM45 will also be an excellent optical target in late February when it becomes brighter than 14th magnitude. However, it will be relatively close to the nearly full Moon, so this may impact the optical obeservations. 1999 RM45 has been classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" (PHA) by the IAU's Minor Planet Center. 2007 BG (456537) 2007 BG was discovered on January 18, 2007 by the Siding Spring Survey in Australia. This object makes a relatively close approach within 0.035 au (13.6 lunar distances) on February 26, 2021, when it will be a weak radar target at Goldstone. The NEOWISE team (Nugent et al., AJ 2015) reported a diameter of ~310 m and a moderately bright optical albedo of ~0.24. The albedo excludes dark taxonomic classes and its size makes it unlikely that the rotation period is more rapid than 2 hours. 2007 BG's orbit has a moderate eccentricity (e = 0.33) and inclination (i = 12.7 deg) and 2021 is the closest approach until an encounter within 0.072 au in 2051. 2007 BG becomes a daytime object in early February, so it is unlikely that lightcurves will be available before the radar observations. 2015 BY310 (535844) 2015 BY310 was discovered on January 18, 2015 by Pan-STARRS 1 at Haleakala. Its absolute magnitude of 21.7 suggests a size within a factor of two of ~140 m. Pravec et al. (2019) reported a very rapid rotation period of only 5.56 minutes, which is exceptionally fast for an object of this size, and a 0.7 mag lightcurve amplitude, which implies an elongated shape. Perna et al. (2018) reported an Sr spectral class. This asteroid will be barely detectable at Goldstone if the rapid period is correct, which would produce an echo with a bandwidth of ~150 Hz (!). The tracks overlap time scheduled for 1999 RM45 and Apophis, so the observing time will still be used even if 2015 BY310 is too weak to detect. We did not know about the extremely rapid rotation period when time for this object was requested years ago. 2015 BY310 will make a number of close approaches over the next ten years (see the animation below): 2021 Mar 10 0.036 au 2023 Mar 7 0.027 au 2025 Mar 5 0.025 au 2027 Mar 4 0.024 au 2029 Mar 2 0.025 au 2031 Mar 2 0.053 au A similar pattern of of close approaches will start in the late 2100s. Due to the repeated close approaches and opportunities for obtaining precise range measurements, 2015 BY310 will be an excellent target for a Yarkovsky effect detection. 2015 BY310 has been classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" (PHA) by the IAU's Minor Planet Center.
