Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: Asteroids 2006 TS7, 2002 VE68, and 2018 TF3

Background

(475534) 2006 TS7
2006 TS7 has an absolute magnitude of 21.2, which suggests a diameter of roughly 0.2 km.
Nothing else is known about the physical properties of this asteroid, which will approach
within 7.5 lunar distances on October 29.

Radar observations are scheduled at Goldstone from Oct. 26-29. Arecibo observations are likely
between Oct. 30-Nov. 1. The SNRs could be strong enough for imaging at Goldstone
on Oct. 29. Arecibo observations should yield images at 7.5 m resolution on all three days.

This asteroid will reach 16th magnitude shortly before the closest approach, so it's possible
that lightcurves and/or spectroscopy might become available by then.

2006 TS7 has been classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the Minor Planet Center.

2002 VE68
2002 VE68 was discovered by LONEOS on 2002 November 11. This object has been observed by radar
twice previously and is known to have a very high circular polarization ratio of about unity,
which strongly suggests a rough near-surface and possibly a high albedo.

This asteroid has a relatively slow rotation period of 13.5 hours and a large lightcurve amplitude
of about 0.8 mag (P. Pravec et al.) that probably indicates an elongated shape.
The absolute magnitude of 20.5 suggests a diameter within a factor of two of 0.3 km.

This object is also a quasi satellite relative to Venus (Mikkola et al. 2004).

The 2018 encounter will occur on November 18 at a distance of 0.038 au. Observations are scheduled
at Goldstone between Oct. 28-Nov. 9. We expect moderately strong SNRs that will be suitable for
CW, ranging, and perhaps coarse-resolution imaging observations. The SNRs at Arecibo will be strong
enough for detailed imaging and time is scheduled between Nov. 9-14. We do not know if the
Arecibo observations will occur, though, due to klystron problems.

2002 VE68 has been classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the Minor Planet Center.

2018 TF3

2018 TF3 was discovered on 2018 October 6 by the Catalina Sky Survey.

2018 TF3 has an absolute magnitude of 20.3 that suggests a diameter of about 300 meters.
Nothing else is know about its physical properties, although lightcurves may become available
that could constrain the rotation period.

Update on October 29: Petr Pravec reports that 2018 TF3 is a binary
system. The rotation period of the primary is 2.35 h and the orbital period of the secondary
is 10.5 h. The lightcurve amplitude of the primary is small so the shape is probably not
substantially elongated.

The 2018 TF3 view periods overlap time scheduled at Goldstone for radar observations of
2002 VE68 on November 3.

This object is too far south for observations at Arecibo.

2018 TF3 has been classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the Minor Planet Center.
