2006 CJ Goldstone Radar Observations Planning
2006 CJ was discovered by the Siding Spring Survey on February 1, 2006. Not much is known about this Aten-class Potentially Hazardous Asteroid other than its absolute magnitude of 20.1, which suggests a diameter within a factor of two of ~300 m. This asteroid will approach within 0.045 AU (17.6 lunar distances) on February 1, 2012. It will be a relatively weak radar target so our primary objective is to detect it to improve its orbit and study its disk-integrated radar properties. 2006 CJ has a perihelion of only 0.166 AU that is deep within the orbit of Mercury, and as a result, this object may provide a useful test of Einstein's theory of general relativity. Observations are also scheduled at Arecibo on February 6-7 after 2006 CJ moves sufficiently far north for Arecibo to track. 2006 CJ is a day-time object until the first week of February, when it should brighten to about 17th magnitude.
