Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: 2005 YQ96 and 2014 XJ3
This is a planning page for radar observations of two near-Earth asteroids: 2005 YQ96 and 2014 XJ3. The view periods for these objects partially overlap and we plan to observe both objects on Dec. 28 and 29. 2005 YQ96 2005 YQ96 was discovered on 2005 December 30 at the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona. This object will approach within 10.3 lunar distances on 2015 January 2, when it could be a relatively strong radar target. After Jan. 2 this asteroid will move south out of Goldstone's declination window. The absolute magnitude of 20.4 suggests a diameter of roughly 260 m, but otherwise we know nothing about the physical properties of this object. Four tracks are scheduled at Goldstone between Dec. 28-Jan. 2. The SNRs during the first two tracks are relatively weak and might be strong enough for ranging. During the track on Jan. 2, the SNRs should be strong enough for imaging. Four tracks are scheduled at Arecibo from Dec 28-31. 2014 XJ3 2014 XJ3 was discovered by Pan-STARRS 1 on 2014 Dec. 3. Little is known about this asteroid except for its absolute magnitude of 20.0, which suggests a diameter of roughly 300 m. 2014 XJ3 will approach within 0.032 au on Dec. 26 when it could be strong enough for radar imaging. Time is scheduled on Dec. 23, 28, and 29. The tracks on Dec. 28 and 29 partially overlap time scheduled for 2005 YQ96. We do not know if time will be scheduled at Arecibo, but if it is, the SNRs should be strong enough for detailed radar imaging from Dec. 26-28. Due to their diameters and the proximity of their orbits to Earth's, the Minor Planet Center has classified 2005 YQ96 and 2014 XJ3 as "Potentially Hazardous Asteroids."
