(164400) 2005 GN59 Goldstone Radar Observations Planning
(164400) 2005 GN59 was discovered by Spacewatch on April 7, 2005. It will approach within 0.0516 AU (20 lunar distances) on October 6 when it will be a strong radar target at Goldstone. 2005 GN59 appears to have a slow rotation period of about 39 hours and a large lightcurve amplitude of about 1 magnitude (M. D. Hicks, pers. comm.), suggesting a shape with substantial elongation. The absolute magnitude of 17.3 suggests a diameter within a factor of two of 1.1 km. Goldstone observations are scheduled on October 7, 9, 11, and 12. Arecibo observations are scheduled on October 13-18. This object will brighten to about 14th magnitude in late September and early October when it will be an excellent target for photometric and spectroscopic observations. This object has been classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the Minor Planet Center.
