Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: (450263) 2003 WD158, (441987) 2010 NY65, 2021 LV2, 2021 ME1, and 2010 XJ11


Background


(450263) 2003 WD158    

2003 WD158 was discovered by LINEAR on November 28, 2003.  This object has an
absolute magnitude of 18.8, diameter of 410 m, and an optical 
albedo of 0.34 (Trilling et al. 2010).  Photometry obtained by Pravec et al. (pers. comm.)
reveals that 2003 WD158 is a very slow rotator with a period of roughly 1500 hours.
The lightcurve has an amplitude of 2.1 magnitudes that is indicative of a highly 
elongated shape.

2003 WD158 will approach within 0.053 au (20.5 lunar distances) on June 15, when it
will be a strong radar target suitable for high-resolution delay-Doppler imaging.

The extremely slow rotation will produce a very narrow echo bandwidth of about 0.03 Hz.


(441987) 2010 NY65
2010 NY65 was discovered by the WISE spacecraft on July 14, 2010.  Data obtained
by the mission suggests a diameter of about 230 meters and a dark optical albedo
of about 0.07.  The rotation period is 4.98 hours and the lightcurve amplitude
is relatively low, suggesting a shape with low elongation.  

This asteroid has been observed extensively with radar during previous apparitions,
and as a result, the orbit has small uncertainties.  We plan to reduce the orbital
uncertainties further, which should increase the SNR of the Yarkovsky effect
detection reported for this object, which will improve constraints on its mass.
Previous radar imaging at Arecibo has revealed a rounded object roughly 300 meters
in diameter.   Given the absolute magnitude of 21.4, the diameter corresponds to 
a dark optical albedo of about 0.06.

NY65 will be a moderately strong radar target in 2021 and possibly suitable for
coarse-resolution imaging.  

2021 LV2
2021 LV2 was discovered on June 7, 2021 by Pan-STARRS1.  This object has an absolute
magnitude of 25.3 that suggests a diameter of roughly 30 meters, but nothing else is
known about its physical properties.  The asteroid will approach within 0.012 au
on June 26 and the view periods overlap time already scheduled for 2010 NY65 on
June 24 and 27.  This object is on the NHATS list.

2021 ME1
2021 ME1 was discovered by ATLAS-Mauna Loa on 2021 June 21.  This object will approach 
within 0.012 au (4.7 lunar distances) on June 27 and the view periods overlap time already
scheduled for 2010 NY65 on June 24 and 27.  

The absolute magnitude is 23.8 and suggests
a diameter within a factor of two of about 60 meters.  The other physical properties
are unknown.

This object will brighten to about 16th magnitude in late June, but unfortuntely, at the
same time it will be close to the full Moon.

2010 XJ11
2010 XJ11 was discovered by the Mt. Lemmon Survey on December 5, 2010, observed for about six
days, and then not observed again until it was recovered by Pan-STARRS 1 on 2021 June 17. 

With an absolute magnitude of 23.9, this asteroid could be about 60 meters in diameter.

XJ11 will approach within 4 lunar distances (0.010 au) on July 1, when it would be a strong
radar target.  The view periods overlapped time previously scheduled for 2010 NY65 on June 28, 
so we added it to the schedule on that day, and detected radar echoes that were stronger 
than expected.  An echo power spectrum with a frequency resolution of 0.03 Hz did not resolve
the echo and probably indicates very slow rotation (possibly > 100 hours).

After we posted this website, Petr Pravec reported that the
rotation period is about 1540 hours.  All else being equal, that increases
the SNRs by a factor of about 26 relative to the numbers above.

June 17 and 18: Bistatic DSS14 > DSS13 SNRs could be about 6x stronger than shown above.
