Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: (163899) 2003 SD220, 4660 Nereus, and 2008 UZ94

Background

(163899) 2003 SD220
2003 SD220 was discovered by LONEOS on September 29, 2003, and subsequently linked with 2000 AD229,
which was also discovered by LONEOS on 2000 January 6. Although this object has two provisional designations,
it is currently known as 2003 SD220.

2003 SD220 has an extremely slow rotation period of roughly 12 days, and lightcurves suggest
non-principal axis rotation (Warner 2016, Carbognani and Buzzi 2016). Radar images at Goldstone
and Arecibo in 2015 and 2018 revealed a
highly-elongated and very-slowly rotating object that is consistent with expectations
from the lightcurves. The 2015 radar images provided a small number of snapshots that did
not cover much rotation so a significant fraction of the surface has not yet been seen.
Nugent et al. (2016) estimated a diameter of 0.8 +- 0.02 km and
an optical albedo of 0.3 +- 0.04 from thermal IR observations by the NEOWISE spacecraft.
Vis-IR observations by Perna et al. (2016) place 2003 SD220 in the Sr spectral class.

2003 SD220 will approach within 0.036 au on 2021 December 17 when it will be one of the strongest
radar targets of the year, with signal-to-noise ratios per run at Goldstone strong enough for
high-resolution delay-Doppler imaging. An extensive campaign is scheduled at Goldstone starting
on November 22 and spanning several weeks.

2003 SD220 has an orbital period of 0.754 years and is currently close to a 4:3 mean motion
resonance with Earth; flybys within 0.1 au began in 2015 and will occur at three year
intervals until 2024. The repeated opportunities to obtain
ranging measurements may lead to detection of the Yarkovsky effect for this object.
This asteroid also approaches within 0.1 au of Venus relatively often.

The Minor Planet Center has classified 2003 SD220 as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid."
This asteroid is on NASA's NHATS list of potential spacecraft mission targets, although
no actual mission is planned to visit this asteroid.

(4660) Nereus Nereus was discovered in February, 1982 by E. F. Helin using the 18" Schmidt telescope at Palomar. Some of its physical properties were studied during the most recent close approach in 2002. This object is elongated with an effective diameter of 330 meters, has a rotation period of 15 hours, and is a member of the optically-bright E spectral class. Goldstone and Arecibo radar images in 2002 revealed that Nereus is somewhat angular and that it has a high circular polarization ratio of about 0.7 (Brozovic et al. 2009). This object is elongated with an effective diameter of 330 meters, has a rotation period of 15 hours, and is a member of the optically-bright E spectral class. In 2021 Nereus will approach within 0.0263 au on Dec. 11 and it will be a strong radar target for several weeks. We expect to obtain delay-Doppler images with resolutions several times finer than the most detailed images obtained in 2002. Consequently, it is likely that surface features will be visible that we did not see in 2002. Goldstone observations are scheduled starting on December 5 and will last about two weeks. Due to the long arc of optical and radar observations, a radar ranging detection in 2021 may show the acceleration of the Yarkovsky effect and facilitate estimation of the mass and bulk density. Nereus has been considered as a possible spacecraft target for many years so the 2021 encounter provides an important opporunity to learn more about this important asteroid. Nereus makes close approaches to both Earth and Mars several times each century. The 2021 flyby will be the closest with Earth until 2060 when Nereus will approach within 0.008 au.
(518678) 2008 UZ94 2008 UZ94 was discovered in October 2008 by LINEAR. Its absolute magnitude of 17.4 suggests a diameter of about 1 km but otherwise nothing is known about its physical properties. This asteroid will approach within 0.059 au on December 5 when it will be a moderately strong radar target suitable for CW observations, ranging, and perhaps coarse-resolution imaging. Observations are scheduled at Goldstone on December 1. UZ94 will brighten to about 15th magnitude a few days after the closest approach, although the solar elongations will be only ~70-90 degrees. NASA's NEOWISE spacecraft observed this asteroid in September, 2021. J. Masiero reports a preliminary diameter of 960+-300 m estimated from NEOWISE data. UPDATE: Goldstone observations revealed that 2008 UZ94 is a binary system.

Goldstone Radar Echoes from Asteroid 2003 SD220

Echo power spectrum from 2003 SD220 obtained on November 22.

2003 SD220 image obtained on Nov. 22. Range increases down and Doppler frequency
increases to the right. Resolution = 18.75 m x 0.015 Hz. The visible extent is
about 20 rows or about 375 meters. Weighted sum of 78 runs.

2003 SD220 delay-Doppler image obtained on Dec. 7. Resolution = 7.5 m x 0.022 Hz.
The visible extent is about 450 meters. This image is a weighted sum of 15 runs.

Delay-Doppler image obtained on Dec. 9. Resolution = 7.5 m x 0.02 Hz.
The visible extent is more than 800 meters. This image is a weighted sum
of 6 runs.

Collage from Dec. 27. Time increases from left to right and then down.
Resolution = 7.5 m x 0.023 Hz.

Image from Dec. 29. The visible extent is about 2.5 km. The image
was stretched by a factor of four in the Doppler dimension.

Goldstone Radar Echoes from Nereus

Echo power spectrum obtained from Nereus on 2021 November 22. Resolution = 0.5 Hz.
Delay-Doppler images of Nereus obtained on 2021 November 30. In each image, time delay
increases down and Doppler frequency increases to the right, so rotation is counterclockwise.
Resolution = 37.5 m x 0.2 Hz. The first four frames are weighted sums of 16 runs and the last
is a sum of 6 runs.
Sequence of delay-Doppler images obtained on 2021 December 5. Resolution = 7.5 m x 0.1 Hz.
Time increases from left to right and top to bottom.
Sequence of delay-Doppler images obtained on December 7. Resolution = 7.5 m x 0.08 Hz.
Each panel shows a weighted sum of 10 runs. Time increases from left to right and top to bottom.
The SNRs decrease substantially partway through the track when the system temperatures increased
by a factor of about four due to passing bands of rain. The images show about 140 degrees of rotation.
Images from December 9. Resolution = 3.75 m x 0.04 Hz. Each panel is a weighted sum of 10 runs.
Subtle features are evident including linear regions with radar-dark pixels, which appear to be
radar shadows, and a small-scale topographic high along the leading edge. The latter feature may
be a boulder. Another small region of radar-bright pixels appears persistently behind the leading
edge and may represent another boulder. These are the highest resolution images of Nereus obtained to date.
Images from December 10. Resolution = 3.75 m x 0.04 Hz. Each panel is a weighted sum of 10 runs.
Images from December 12. Resolution = 3.75 m x 0.04 Hz. Each panel is a weighted sum of 10 runs.
Each panel covers approximately the same interval, but there were datataking problems near the end,
so the integrations in the last three panels include fewer runs.

Goldstone Radar Echoes from 2008 UZ94

Echo power spectrum obtained from 2008 UZ94 on 2021 December 1. Resolution = 1 Hz.
The bandwidth is about 20 Hz, and combined with an estimated diameter of 0.96 km, this
suggests a rotation period of (4.8 h)[cos(delta)], where delta is the unknown subradar latitude.

Goldstone delay-Doppler image of 2008 UZ94. Resolution = 75 m x 3.1 Hz. Time delay
increases down and Doppler frequency increases to the right. The image is weighted sum
of 17 runs. The image shows two objects whose separation changes with time.

Setups

2003 SD220
This object is going to have a narrow bandwidth due to its extremely slow rotation.
The bandwidth will barely change during individual tracks but could vary by more than
a factor of two over several days due to the elongated shape and if this asteroid is
in a non-principal axis spin state, which seems likely.
