Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: (163899) 2003 SD220, 2007 EJ, and Comet 46P/Wirtanen
2003 SD220 2003 SD220 was discovered by LONEOS on September 29, 2003, and subsequently linked with 2000 AD229, which was also discovered by LONEOS on 2000 January 6. Although this object has two provisional designations, it is currently known as 2003 SD220. 2003 SD220 has an extremely slow rotation period of roughly 12 days, and lightcurves suggest non-principal axis rotation (Warner 2016, Carbognani and Buzzi 2016). Radar images at Goldstone and Arecibo in 2015 revealed a highly-elongated and very-slowly rotating object that is consistent with expectations from the lightcurves. The 2015 radar images provided a small number of snapshots that did not cover much rotation so a significant fraction of the surface has not yet been seen. Nugent et al. (2016) estimated a diameter of 0.8 +- 0.02 km and an optical albedo of 0.3 +- 0.04 from thermal IR observations by the NEOWISE spacecraft. Vis-IR observations by Perna et al. (2016) place 2003 SD220 in the Sr spectral class. 2003 SD220 will approach within 0.019 au on December 22 when it will be one of the strongest radar targets of the year, with signal-to-noise ratios per run at Goldstone approaching 1000 on Dec. 21-22. The 2018 encounter will be at about 1/4th the distance of the 2015 flyby, so the SNRs will be nearly 20x stronger, and if the observations go well, we hope to obtain delay-Doppler images with range resolutions as fine as 1.875 m/pixel. Radar observations at Goldstone will begin on November 24 during time that overlaps tracks scheduled for 2007 EJ. Other tracks are scheduled starting on December 7 when the SNRs will be much stronger. Some of the Goldstone observations will use DSS-13 to transmit. We are planning request time at Green Bank to receive once the complete schedules at DSS-14 and DSS-13 are available. Preliminary observations occurred at Arecibo on August 25 at a distance of 0.24 au. Additional observations at Arecibo are scheduled on December 18-22, and reception may occur at Green Bank during some of the time. Radar speckle observations are also planned using Arecibo to transmit and elements of the VLBA to receive. CW radar observations are also planned in Australia using one of the DSN antennas at Canberra to transmit at 7190 MHz and the Australia Telescope Compact Array to receive. We also plan to conduct interntational bistatic observations with the Sardinia Radio Telescope and the Quasar VLBI network in Russia. Radar observations of 2003 SD220 occur on some of the same dates as comet 46P/Wirtanen, and the view periods for the two objects partially overlap. 2003 SD220 has an orbital period of 0.754 years and is currently close to a 4:3 mean motion resonance with Earth; flybys within 0.1 au began in 2015 and will occur at three year intervals until 2024. The repeated opportunities to obtain ranging measurements may lead to detection of the Yarkovsky effect for this object. This asteroid also approaches within 0.1 au of Venus relatively often. The Minor Planet Center has classified 2003 SD220 as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid." This asteroid is also on NASA's NHATS list of potential spacecraft mission targets, although no actual mission is planned to visit this asteroid.
Comet 46P/Wirtanen 46P/Wirtanen is a short-period comet that was discovered in 1948 by Carl Wirtanen at Lick Observatory in California. Comet Wirtanen will approach within 0.0775 au on 2018 December 16. This will be among the closest comet approaches in the last fifty years and it provides an important opportunity to study a comet with radar and at other wavelengths. This is also the closest approach by this particular comet for centuries. Opportunities to observe comets with radar are uncommon and to date radar observations of only twenty have occurred. The close approach will also occur only four days after perihelion passage when cometary activity could be at its peak. This comet has been studied extensively during prior apparitions. The nucleus is about 1.1 km in diameter and estimates of the rotation period yield values of 6 or 7.6 h. It is possible that the nucleus is in a non-principal axis spin state. The lightcurves suggest a moderately elongated aspect ratio of at least 1.4. Consequently, variations in the bandwidth of the nucleus should be visible if the SNRs are sufficiently strong. Historically this comet has been very active during perihelion passages, but we do not know if it will develop a conspicuous tail. The SNRs at Goldstone could be relatively weak due to the reduced transmitter power of 100 kW, and as such, we will concentrate on CW observations of the nucleus and coma. CW echoes can provide important constraints on the size distribution of coma particles. The SNRs at Arecibo will be much stronger and are ideal for detailed radar imaging of the nucleus, which should reveal its dimensions and surface features, and estimation of the spin state. Radar observations at Goldstone are scheduled from Dec. 7-21. Arecibo observations will occur between Dec. 11-19. View periods at Goldstone for Comet Wirtanen and 2003 SD220 overlap on some days. Because the comet will be close to Earth in mid-December, it may reach 4th magnitude and be visible to the naked eye. However, predicting cometary magnitudes is notoriously unreliable so it's also possible that the comet could be much fainter so that binoculars or a small telescope are necessary to see it. At the time of closest approach, the comet will appear in the constellation Taurus close to the Pleiades. This comet was the original target for ESA's Rosetta mission prior to a launch delay that forced a change of the target to Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Comet Wirtanen was also the target for the proposed Comet Hopper mission in a recent NASA Discovery Program competition. Due to its perihelion distance near Earth, its short orbital period, and relatively low orbital inclination, Comet Wirtanen could be a candidate for a future spacecraft mission. Consequently, any information on its physical properties is very important. Comet Wirtanen currently has an orbital period of 5.4 years. It makes frequent approaches within 0.6 au of Jupiter that change the orbital parameters. For example, in 1984 the comet approached within 0.45 au of Jupiter, and in 2054 it will approach within 0.12 au, an encounter that will produce substantial changes in the comet's heliocentric orbit. The 2018 radar observations of Comet Wirtanen are part of a multi-wavelength campaign by many researchers using a suite of telescopes. For more information on observations at other telescopes, please see the University of Maryland Comet Wirtanen website: http://wirtanen.astro.umd.edu/46P/46P_2018.shtml Below is a link to an article posted by Sky and Telescope that features information on the comet, a finder chart, and information on other comets visible in small telescopes in 2018: https://www.skyandtelescope.com/observing/bright-comet-prospects-for-2018/
(410088) 2007 EJ 2007 EJ will approach within 0.062 au on 2018 November 22. In 2015, this asteroid was observed with radar at Arecibo, in the thermal infrared by NASA's NEOWISE mission, and with photometry. Lightcurves obtained by Brian Warner give a rotation period of 4.8 hours and a low lightcurve amplitude of 0.16 magnitudes, which implies a shape with a low elongation. The NEOWISE results indicate a diameter of 1 km and an optical albedo of 0.1 (Nugent et al. 2015). 2007 EJ was discovered on 2007 March 9 by the Mt. Lemmon Survey. This asteroid will be a relatively weak radar target at Goldstone in late November, 2018, but a strong imaging target at Arecibo in early December, when it might be possible to obtain delay-Doppler images with a resolution as fine as 15 m/pixel. Goldstone observations are scheduled from Nov. 24-29 on dates when the view periods overlap those for 2003 SD220 extensively. The Arecibo schedule is not yet available, but several tracks are likely beginning on November 29.

After Dec. 28 this asteroid will move too far south for Goldstone to track. Goldstone SNRs assume Ptx = 100 kW and Tsys = 17 K Due to the slow rotation, images obtained as early as Dec. 7 may place only 10-14 Doppler bins on the asteroid using a full-length FFT, so we may request time at the GBT starting on that date or shortly afterward. 2003 SD220 will reach high elevations during some dates when time is scheduled at Goldstone, the tracks occur when elevations are low enough that there won't be any problems. 2007 EJ We are expecting a bandwidth of about 20 Hz for 2007 EJ, but we expect relatively modest SNRs, so we're going to adopt an intial CW setup with a frequency resolution of 5 Hz so we can see an echo quickly. 2003 SD220 This object is going to have a narrow bandwidth due to its extremely slow rotation. The bandwidth will barely change during individual tracks but could vary by more than a factor of two over several days due to the elongated shape and if this asteroid is in a non-principal axis spin state, which seems likely. Comet Wirtanen We're going to use a wider than usual CW bandwidth for the comet in order to detect echoes from the coma, which could span more than 1000 Hz. The echo from the nucleus could have a bandwidth close to 20 Hz.
