Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: Asteroids (163696) 2003 EB50, (444584) 2006 UK, and (3361) Orpheus
(163696) 2003 EB50 2003 EB50 is a slow rotator with a period of about 62 h that may be in a non-principal axis spin state (Warner 2014, 2016). This object has a lightcurve amplitude of 0.8 magnitudes, indicative of a very elongated shape, which was confirmed by radar imaging at Arecibo in 2015. The radar imaging strongly suggest that this object is a contact binary. The diameter is in the realm of 1.7 km. The spectral class is unknown. Preliminary results from NASA's NEOWISE mission suggest a diameter of roughly 1.5 km and a relatively high albedo (J. Masiero, pers. comm.). This is consistent with the preliminary results from radar observations in 2015. 2003 EB50 was discovered by LONEOS on 2003 March 10. The asteroid has an absolute magnitude of 16.4. 2003 EB50 will reach 13th magnitude in late November when it will be at favorable solar elongations, so additional optical observations are possible. This could help us understand the spin state and provide the first vis-IR spectroscopy for this object. In 2017, 2003 EB50 will approach more closely than it did during previous radar observations in December 2015. It will be a strong radar target and we anticipate obtaining images at Goldstone with resolutions at least as fine as 37.5 m/pixel. The SNRs at Arecibo will be very strong and should result in images with a range resolution of 7.5 m/pixel. We are expecting a bandwidth of about 2.7 Hz. (444584) 2006 UK 2006 UK was discovered by Spacewatch in October of 2006. Nothing is known about 2006 UK other than its absolute magnitude of 20.2, which suggests a diameter within a factor of two of 0.34 km. Update on 2017 Oct. 26: P. Pravec reports a rotation period of 5.7 h and a lightcurve amplitude of 0.24 mag. This asteroid will approach within 0.022 au (8.7 lunar distances) on 2017 Nov. 17, when it should be a very strong radar target at Goldstone. We expect to obtain detailed images with resolutions of at least 7.5 m that could place hundreds of pixels on the object. This should be a glorious radar imaging target at Arecibo with SNRs in the tens of thousands. The rotation period and our guess for the diameter imply a bandwidth of about 6 Hz. 2006 UK will be bright enough for photometry and vis-IR spectroscopy in the first half of November, so additional information on its physical properties may become available shortly before the radar observations start. 2006 UK is classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the Minor Planet Center. (3361) Orpheus Orpheus was discovered by C. Torres at Cerro El Roble Observatory, Chile, on April 24, 1982. Previous measurements by NASA's NEOWISE mission have yielded a diameter of 0.35 km (Mainzer et al. 2011) and a bright optical albedo of 0.36. Wisniewski (1991) reported a V spectral class, but more recent observations at higher resolution and SNRs by DeMeo et al. (2014) place Orpheus in the Q class. Orpheus has a rotation period of 3.5 h and a lightcurve amplitude of 0.25 mag (Wisniewski 1991, Polishook et al. 2012), suggesting a shape with a relatively low elongation. Chesley et al. (2015) report a 4-sigma Yarkovksy effect detection for Orpheus. Radar ranging astrometry in 2017 could increase the SNR of that detection and have important implications for estimation of the asteroid's mass and bulk density. We are expecting weak radar SNRs for this object that should be suitable for CW observations and perhaps coarse-resolution ranging. We are expecting a bandwidth of about 10 Hz. This object has been considered as a possible flyby target for NASA's Double Asteroid Redirect Test (DART) mission so any physical observations are important. Orpheus is on NASA's NHATS list of potential mission targets and this object is classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the Minor Planet Center.

Orpheus will be the first target among these asteroids. Given information on its rotation period and diameter, we are expecting a bandwidth of about 8.5 Hz. 2003 EB50 is a slow, possibly non-principal axis rotator and we are expecting a bandwidth of roughly 3 Hz. We'll start with a CW setup that resolves the object in frequency, assess the SNRs and the bandwidth, and then go from there. CW setup: --------------------------------------------------------------------------- TX polarization RCP RCV polarization LCP & RCP Frequency hops: no hopping Bandwidth: 5000 Hz TXoffset +500 Hz FFT for PFS files: 25000 for 0.2 Hz resolution (one FFT every 5 seconds) Ranging setups: --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10-usec baud 10 usec code 127 PRP 1270 usec FFT 64 ncoh 1 bandwidth 787 Hz resolution 12.3 Hz TXOFF +100 Hz (echo in column 32 + 8 = 40) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11-usec baud 11 usec code 127 PRP 1397 usec FFT 64 ncoh 1 bandwidth 716 Hz resolution 11.2 Hz TXOFF +100 Hz (echo in column 32 + 9 = 41) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1-usec baud 1 usec code 255 FFT 512 ncoh 16 bandwidth 245 Hz resolution 0.48 Hz TXOFF +50 Hz ---------------------------------------------------------------------
