Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: (317255) 2002 DJ5, (350751) 2002 AW, and (363599) 2004 FG11

Background

(317255) 2002 DJ5
2002 DJ5 was discovered on February 21, 2002 by Spacecwatch. Little is known about
this asteroid other than its absolute magnitude of 19.8, which suggests a diameter of
about 350 meters.

Update: NEOWISE observations reported by J. Masiero (pers. comm.) provide preliminary estimates of ~0.4 km for the
diameter and ~0.2 for the optical albedo.

Another update: Petr Pravec reports a rotation period of 2.61 hours.

This asteroid will approach within 0.055 au on March 31 when the Goldstone SNRs
should be strong enough for CW and ranging observations. We are not expecting SNRs
sufficient for delay-Doppler imaging.

2002 DJ5 is classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the Minor Planet Center.

(350751) 2002 AW 2002 AW was discovered by Spacewatch on January 5, 2002. Recent photometric observations reported by Pravec et al. (2022) indicate that 2002 AW is a B-class binary system with an orbital period of 25.1 hours and a primary rotation period of 4.65 hours. Given the absolute magnitude of 20.75 and the spectral class, the primary could be close to 400 meters in diameter. The asteroid will approach within 0.057 au on April 5. Given the diameter and rotation period, we are expecting SNRs strong enough for CW observations, ranging, and possibly coarse-resolution imaging. The photometry suggests that the secondary/primary diameter ratio is about 0.2, so the secondary may be only ~80 m in diameter and possibly too small to detect. View periods for 2002 AW overlap those for 2002 DJ6 on several days. 2002 AW is classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the Minor Planet Center.
(363599) 2004 FG11 2004 FG11 is one of the smallest binary near-Earth asteroid systems known. This object has been observed twice at Arecibo, where delay-Doppler imaging revealed a rounded primary with a diameter of about 150 meters. 2004 FG11 was discovered on March 23, 2004 by LINEAR. The asteroid will approach within 0.049 au on April 12 when it will be a relatively weak target with SNRs sufficient for CW observations and ranging but not for imaging. Hicks et al. reported that 2004 FG11 is a V-class object. Other V-class NEAs observed with radar have circular polarization ratios of 0.6 - 0.8 but Arecibo observations in 2012 and 2014 yielded circular polarization ratios of only 0.2 - 0.3, hinting that FG11 is in a different spectral class. The Yarkovsky effect has been detected for this asteroid, which is also classified as a Potentially Hazardous Asteroid.

Goldstone Radar Echoes from Asteroid 2002 DJ5

Echo power spectrum from 2002 DJ5 obtained on March 29.
Echo power in standard deviations is plotted as a function of Doppler frequency.
The frequency resolution is 1 Hz and the bandwidth is about 9 Hz.
This echo power spectrum is an integration spanning about 40 minutes.

The bandwidth and the 2.61 h rotation period reported by P. Pravec place a lower
bound on the maximum pole-on extent of about 0.23 km.

Goldstone Radar Echoes from Asteroid 2002 AW

Echo power spectrum from 2002 AW obtained on March 29.
The frequency resolution is 0.5 Hz and the bandwidth is about 12 Hz.

Goldstone Radar Echoes from Asteroid 2017 WN13

Echo power spectrum from 2017 WN13 obtained on April 3.
The frequency resolution is 0.25 Hz and the bandwidth is about 3 Hz.

Goldstone Radar Echoes from Asteroid 2004 FG11

Echo power spectrum from 2004 FG11 obtained on April 11.
The frequency resolution is 0.5 Hz and the bandwidth is about 3 Hz.

Echo power spectrum from 2004 FG11 obtained on April 12.
The frequency resolution is 0.2 Hz. The echoes shows pronounced spikes
at the same frequencies in the OC and SC channels: these are probably
echoes from the secondary.

Collage of echo power spectra from 2004 FG11 obtained on April 13.
Time coverage is indicated on each panel, most of which span 20 runs.
The frequency resolution is 0.2 Hz. The echoes show pronounced spikes
that are probably echoes from the secondary, whose Doppler position changes
with time. The blue and red curves indicate OC and SC echo power.

NEOWISE results reported by J. Masiero indicate that D = 0.4 km. All else being equal,
that indicates that the SNRs above should be multiplied by a factor of 1.2.
The optical albedo hints that this could be an SQ-type asteroid.

Due to the diameter, we are expecting a bandwidth smaller than 20 Hz.
