Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: (163132) 2002 CU11 and (333578) 2006 KM103
2002 CU11 2002 CU11 was discovered on 2002 February 7 by LINEAR. It was observed by NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) spacecraft in 2010. Thermal modeling of the WISE data by A. K. Mainzer et al. (2011) yields a diameter of 460 meters and an unusually high optical albedo of 0.41. Spectroscopy by Thomas et al. (2014) gives an ambiguous CX classification, but coupled with the high optical albedo from Mainzer et al., this suggests that 2002 CU11 is an X-class object, and more specifically, an E-class object. All E-class asteroids observed with radar to date have had high circular polarization ratios, so we may also see that with this object. The rotation period, lightcurve amplitude, and pole direction are unknown. 2002 CU11 is approaching from high northern declinations en route to an encounter at 0.035 AU on August 30, when it will be a strong radar imaging target. It will move south rapidly and exit Goldstone's declination range after August 31. Observations at Goldstone are scheduled on August 27, 28, 30, and 31 with the strongest SNRs occurring on August 30. Observations at Arecibo are scheduled on August 28 and 29. 2006 KM103 2006 KM103 was discovered by the Mt. Lemmon Survey on May 31, 2006. The absolute magnitude of 20.0 suggests the diameter is within a factor of two of 320 meters. This asteroid will approach within 0.050 AU on September 2, when it will be a moderately strong radar target at Goldstone and an imaging target at Arecibo. The Goldstone SNRs should be strong enough for CW, ranging, and possibly coarse-resolution imaging. Three tracks are scheduled at Goldstone: August 30 and September 1 and 2, dates that overlap Labor Day weekend. On August 30, the view period scheduled for 2006 KM103 overlaps time when 2002 CU11 is visible so we may try to observe both objects during that track. Update: On Aug. 11 Brian Warner reported a rotation period of 5.69 +- 0.02 h and a lightcurve amplitude of 0.6 magnitudes, suggesting a shape with significant elongation. The Minor Planet Center has classified 2002 CU11 and 2006 KM103 as "Potentially Hazardous Asteroids."

2002 CU11 From Jon Giorgini, 2014 Aug 27: For 163132 (2002 CU11), set-ups at DSS-14 and Arecibo have been updated to use s103, which is based on the now cleaned-up optical dataset (308 measurements spanning 2002-Feb-7 to 2014-Aug-27) and radar astrometry from Goldstone this morning.
