Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: (153591) 2001 SN263, 2018 CW2, (455176) 1999 VF22, 2016 QJ44, (138971) 2001 CB21, and 2022 BH7


Background


(153591) 2001 SN263
2001 SN263 is a triple system (Becker et al. 2015) that was observed in 2008 at Arecibo and
with numerous optical telescopes that obtained photometry and spectroscopy. 
This was the first triple asteroid system discovered in the near-Earth population, and as 
of February 2022, only four such objects are known among more than 70 NEAs with satellites.

The primary has a diameter of 2.5 km and a rotation period of 3.4 h (Becker et al. 2015).  The satellites have 
orbital periods of 16.46 hours and ~6 days (Fang et al. 2011) and diameters of 0.4 and 0.8 km.
The rotation of the inner satellite is synchronous with its orbital period. The rotation period 
of the outer satellite is 13.43 h and much more rapid than its 6-day orbital period.  
The semimajor axes of the satellite orbits are ~3 and ~13 primary radii (Fang et al. 2011).

Due to the large diameter of the primary and the absolute magnitude of 17.0, the optical albedo 
is about 0.05.  2001 SN263 is a B-class object (Perna et al. 2014, Becker et al. 2015) similar
in composition to 101955 Bennu.

Becker et al. report that the primary has a shape like a top with a distinct bulge at the equator.
The satellites are more elongated, but due to the relatively coarse resolution of the images
obtained in 2008, the models of the satellites show considerably less detail than for the primary.
Becker et al. obtained a pole direction for the primary of (lambda, beta) = (309, -80)+-15 deg
in the ecliptic coordinate frame.

In 2022, 2001 SN263 will make a relatively distant approach within 0.101 au and the asteroid will
be detectable at Goldstone for several weeks. 
We expect SNRs strong enough for coarse-resolution imaging and detection of
the larger, outer satellite, but we may struggle to detect the smaller, inner one.

Time at Goldstone is scheduled on 18 tracks between February 19 - March 9.
The observations will last long enough to observe about three orbital revolutions by the outer moon
and should reduce the uncertainties in its orbital parameters substantially. 
The 2022 observations will also show somewhat more of the primary's south polar region 
that was not visible in 2008.

2001 SN263 is classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid."


2018 CW2 2018 CW2 will approach within 0.0057 au (2.2 lunar distances) on February 18, 2022. Its absolute magnitude is 25.8, suggesting a diameter of 20-30 meters, so it will be a strong radar target. Otherwise its physical properties are unknown. This is an Aten-class object with an orbital period of only 0.66 years. It has an relatively high eccentricity of 0.42 and it approaches within 0.44 au of the Sun, which nearly overlaps the orbit of Mercury. Among all the tracks scheduled at Goldstone in late February, the view period for 2018 CW2 overlaps only the one on February 19-20, when the distance will be about 0.011 au and when SNRs should be strong enough for CW, ranging, and possibly imaging observations. 2018 CW2 is an excellent candidate for detection of the Yarkovsky effect during the February, 2022 encounter. If detected, this would enable estimation of the asteroid's mass. This is the smallest object on the schedule at Goldstone in February.
(455176) 1999 VF22 1999 VF22 was discovered by the Catalina Sky Survey on Nov. 10, 1999. This asteroid will encounter Earth within 0.036 au on February 22 when SNRs will be strong enough for CW observations, ranging, and coarse-resolution delay-Doppler imaging. Previous radar imaging at Arecibo in 2019 revealed a rounded object with a diameter of roughly 0.3 km. The rotation period is unknown, but Arecibo echo bandwidths from 2019 and a rough diameter of ~0.3 km suggest a rotation period in the realm of 4 hours. This object will brighten to about 16th magnitude in late February when it will be a good target for photometry and spectroscopy. 1999 VF22 is classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid."
2016 QJ44 2016 QJ44 was discovered by the Mt. Lemmon Survey on August 28, 2016. This asteroid has an absolute magnitude of 20.2, suggesting a diameter within a factor of two of 300 meters, but otherwise nothing is known about its physical properties. This asteroid might be observed by the NEOWISE spacecraft in late February, and if so, then an estimate for the diameter could become available. 2016 QJ44 will approach within 0.050 au (about 20 lunar distances) on February 24, 2022. We are expecting signal-to-noise ratios at Goldstone strong enough for CW and ranging observations but not for delay-Doppler imaging. Time is scheduled on seven dates between February 19-26, but that time overlaps several other asteroids, and we may not observe QJ44 on each day. The Minor Planet Center has classified 2016 QJ44 as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid."
(138971) 2001 CB21 2001 CB21 will approach within 0.033 au (about 13 lunar distances) on March 4, 2022, when it will be a strong radar target with SNRs suitable for high-resolution delay-Doppler imaging and 3D shape estimation. This object has a rotation period of 3.3 h (Galad et al. 2005) and a lightcurve amplitude of 0.2 mag, which probably indicates a shape with a relatively low elongation. Spitzer Space Telescope observations by Mueller et al. (2011) give a diameter of 0.6 km. 2001 CB21 was observed with radar at Arecibo in 2005. The echo bandwidth of 3.2 Hz and the 3.3 h rotation period place a lower bound on the maximum pole-on dimension of 0.38 km that is consistent with the diameter of 0.6 km estimated by Mueller et al. (2011) from thermal infrared observations. 2001 CB21 will pass through the field of regard for the NEOWISE spacecraft in early March when an independent estimate of the diameter could become available. The spectral class and pole direction are unknown. This object will brighten to about 14th magnitude from late February to early March, when spectroscopy and photometry should be possible. Five tracks are scheduled at Goldstone from February 26 - March 3. One track is also scheduled in Australia on March 3 using DSS-43 to transmit and the ATCA to receive (S. Horiuchi et al.). 2001 CB21 has a low delta-V and was considered as a possible flyby target for the DART spacecraft to 65803 Didymos, but the flyby was cancelled. 2001 CB21 is classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid."
2022 BH7 2022 BH7 was discoverd by Pan-STARRS 2 on 2022 January 26. This asteroid has an absolute magnitude of 21, suggesting a diameter of roughly 200 meters. It will approach within 0.015 au (5.8 lunar distances) on February 18, and the view periods overlap time already scheduled for other asteroids at Goldstone on Feb. 19, 20, and 21. The close approach and diameter indicate that this should be a strong radar target with signal-to-noise ratios suitable for imaging at 3.75 meter resolution. Nothing else is known about its physical properties. 2022 BH7 is classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid."

Goldstone Radar Echoes from Asteroid 2001 SN263

The frequency resolution is 2 Hz.  The strong spike at a frequency
of about -5 Hz is probably an echo from the outer satellite.
This echo power spectrum is an integration spanning about one hour.

SNR/run for the outer  satellite (Beta)  should be about 1/2 of values for the primary.  We should detect it. 
SNR/run for the innner satellite (Gamma) should be about 1/5 of values for the primary.  We may struggle to detect it.

The subradar latitudes in 2022 will be similar to those in 2008.  The principal
difference, although subtle, is that the 2022 subradar latitudes will extend down to -12 deg
on the last few days, which should reveal most of the small south polar region not seen in 2008.
That could provide a modest improvement in the 3D model of the primary and in estimates of
the volume and bulk density.
