(68216) 2001 CV26 Goldstone Radar Observations Planning

Background

(68216) 2001 CV26 was discovered on Feb 1, 2001 by LINEAR - Lincoln Laboratory ETS in New Mexico.
2001 CV26 will be an exceptionally strong target at both Goldstone and Arecibo. It will approach Earth
within 0.025 AU (less than 10 lunar distances) on Oct. 8. We do not know much about
this asteroid except that its absolute magnitude of 16.3 implies a large (~1.8 km plus/minus a factor of two) object.
Preliminary rotation period estimate based on the lightcurves (J. Pollock) is ~2.4 hours.
We expect to use our highest resolution imaging (19 m at Goldstone and 7.5 m at Arecibo).
We hope to put hundreds (maybe even thousands for Arecibo) of delay-Doppler pixels on the object.

2001 CV26 will be an excellent optical target throughout September.

Goldstone observations are scheduled on Oct. 11, Oct. 17, and Oct. 18.
This object will be observed at Arecibo from Oct. 11-16.

2001 CV26 has been classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the
Minor Planet Center.
