Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: Asteroids 1999 KW4 and 2001 KB67
(66391) 1999 KW4 1999 KW4 is a binary system that was discovered by LINEAR on May 20, 1999. 1999 KW4 was imaged extensively with radar at Goldstone and Arecibo during a close encounter within 0.032 au in May and June of 2001, from which Ostro et al. (2006) estimated 3D models of the primary, referred to as "Alpha," and the secondary, designated as "Beta." The Alpha model has major axes of 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.3 km, an effective diameter of 1.3 km, and a shape that resembles a top. Alpha also has a pronounced ridge along its equator. The Beta model is significantly smaller with major axes of 0.57 x 0.46 x 0.35 km and its long axis is oriented toward Alpha (albeit with small oscillations). 1999 KW4 was the third binary near-Earth asteroid imaged by radar, following 2000 DP107 and 2000 UG11 and the first imaged in detail. Alpha has a rotation period of 2.76 h and a pole direction of (lambda, beta) = (326, -65) degrees. The orbital and rotation periods of Beta are synchronous with a period of 17.42 hours, but Beta librates during its motion about Alpha, and there are periodic changes in the motion caused by the non-spherica shape of Alpha and the deep perihelion of only 0.200 au, which results in solar tidal effects (Scheeres et al. 2006). The bulk densities of Alpha and Beta are 1.97+-0.24 and 2.81+0.82-0.63 g/cm^3. For additional details about 1999 KW4's physical and orbital properties, please see Ostro et al. (2006) and Scheeres et al. (2006). Additional radar observations were conducted at Arecibo in 2002 and 2017 but at much lower signal-to-noise ratios. 1999 KW4 will approach within 0.078 au on 2018 May 27. Due to the klystron situation at Goldstone, which limits monostatic transmitter power to only 100 kW, 1999 KW4 will be a weak target. The SNRs will be dramatically stronger at Arecibo, but unfortunately a generator problem there has probably cancelled observations. Observations are scheduled at Goldstone on May 26 and June 1 during times that overlap the schedule for 2001 KB67. 1999 KW4 has been classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the Minor Planet Center. (68347) 2001 KB67 2001 KB67 was discovered by LINEAR on 2001 May 30. This object has an absolute magnitude of 19.8, suggesting a diameter within a factor of two of 0.4 km, but otherwise nothing is known about its physical properties. This object has not been observed with radar previously. 2001 KB67 will approach within 9.3. lunar distances on May 29 when it will be a moderately strong radar target at Goldstone and a very strong imaging target at Arecibo. Time is scheduled at Goldstone on four dates between May 26-June 1. No tracks are scheduled at Arecibo due to generator problems. The 2018 flyby will be the closest since 1914 and until 2051. The Minor Planet Center has classified 2001 KB67 as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid."

Orbital motion of 1999 KW4 from December 2017 until July 2019 shown in helicentric reference frame. The asteroid makes two close flybys during this interval. The animation begins with an oblique view and then tilts to a perspective looking down on the plane of Earth's orbit from the north. The animation illustrates the unusually eccentric orbit and deep perihelion of only 0.200 au, which is inside the semimajor axis of Mercury. Close Earth encounters tend to be relatively long because they occur near aphelion when 1999 KW4's orbital motion is slow.

1999 KW4: The equatorial diameter, rapid rotation period, and a nearly equatorial view indicate that the bandwidths at Goldstone will be about 55 Hz. The SNRs are going to be weak, so in order to see an echo relatively quickly we're going to use coarse resolution setups. We don't know what to expect for the bandwidth of 2001 KB67 due its unknown rotation period and diameter, but it's likely we'll start with the same configuration below that's designed for 1999 KW4.
