Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: (137170) 1999 HF1, 2022 ER5, 2022 DP3, and 2022 EO4
(137170) 1999 HF1 1999 HF1 was discovered on April 20, 1999 by LONEOS. 1999 HF1 is a binary near-Earth asteroid (Pravec et al. 2002) that has not yet been observed by radar. This object has been observed extensively with photometry, spectroscopy, and infrared radiometry. The primary has a rotation period of 2.32 h and a lightcurve amplitude of about 0.1 mag, suggesting a shape with low elongation. Published estimates of the diameter vary from 3.8 to 5.1 km. Consequently, 1999 HF1 could be one of the largest known binary NEAs. The spectral class is indeterminate: X or C/X. The diameter estimates from infrared observations correspond to optical albedos between 0.1 to 0.5. The X group is ambiguous in the absence of an optical albedo measurement and could indicate an E-, M-, or P-type taxonomy. These spectral classes imply very different compositions, so the radar observations (even a null result) will provide useful measurements. If HF1 is an E-type object, then the diameter could be ~2.5 km, and we will struggle to detect echoes. If this is a metallic M-class object, then the radar albedo could be very high and the SNRs might be strong enough for coarse-resolution imaging. A major goal of the observations is to estimate the diameter, compute the optical albedo, and constrain the spectral class. The secondary has an orbital period of 14.0 h that is among the most rapid known for NEAs with companions. The secondary/primary diameter ratio is about 0.2, implying a secondary diameter of roughly 0.8 km if the diameter of the primary is about 3.8 km. 1999 HF1 will make a relatively distant approach within 0.182 au in mid March and Goldstone observations are scheduled on three tracks between March 14 - 20. We are expecting SNRs sufficient for CW and ranging observations but probably not strong enough for detailed imaging.
2022 ER5 2022 ER5 was discovered on March 11, 2022 by Pan-STARRS 2. This asteroid will approach within two lunar distances (0.0054 au) on March 20 and it will be a strong radar target. Nothing is known about its physical properties other than its absolute magnitude of 25.6, which suggests a diameter of roughly 23 meters. The view periods for 2022 ER5 overlap those scheduled for 1999 HF1 on March 18 and 19/20. This asteroid will brighten to about 17th magnitude, but it will be less than 40 degrees from the full Moon until March 19, so optical observations could be challenging. Additional astrometry is necessary to reduce the pointing uncertainties and would be greatly appreciated!
2022 DP3 2022 DP3 was discovered on February 26, 2022 at the Kitt Peak Bok 2.25 m telescope in Arizona. This asteroid has an absolute magnitude 24.6 that suggests a diameter of 30-40 meters but otherwise nothing is known about its physical properties. 2022 DP3 will approach within 0.0077 au (3 lunar distances) on March 15, when it should be a strong radar target suitable for imaging at 3.75 meter resolution. View periods for 2022 DP3 overlap those already scheduled for 1999 HF1 on one day: March 14. DP3 should be a much stronger target than HF1 and it is likely we will start the track by observing DP3.
2022 EO4 2022 EO4 was discovered by the Mt. Lemmon Survey on 2022 March 9. 2022 EO4 has an absolute magnitude of 25.4 that suggests a diameter of 20-30 meters. Nothing else is known about its physical properties. This asteroid will approach within 0.0071 au on March 13 and it could be a moderately strong radar target with SNRs strong enough for CW observations, ranging, and possibly imaging. The view periods overlap time already scheduled for 1999 HF1 during the last hour of the track on March 14.

Echo power spectrum from 1999 HF1 obtained on March 18. Echo power in standard deviations is plotted as a function of Doppler frequency. The frequency resolution is 5 Hz. The bandwidth of about 100 Hz and the 2.32 h rotation period place a lower bound on the maximum pole-on breadth of 2.55 km. At face value, 2.55 km is smaller than previous estimates, but it's a _lower_ bound, so it's consistent. One possibility is that the subradar latitude was well off the equator (note that the pole direction is unknown). The circular polarization ratio is about 0.4. E-class NEAs observed by radar have ratios larger than 0.8, so it seems very unlikely that HF1 is an E-type object.Echo power spectrum obtained on March 19-20.
Echo power spectrum from 2022 ER5 obtained on March 20. Echo power in standard deviations is plotted as a function of Doppler frequency. The frequency resolution is 1 Hz. This echo was obtained using JPL/Horizons solution 7, which had a 3-sigma Doppler uncertainty of about 400 Hz. Consequently the Doppler correction of about -50 Hz is well within 1-sigma. The bandwidth of about 10 Hz and the absolute magnitude of 25.5, which suggests a diameter of 20-30 meters, strongly imply that this asteroid is a rapid rotator with a period of less than about 0.5 hours. The round-trip light travel time during these observations was about 5.5 seconds (corresponding to a distance of about 2.1 Earth-Moon distances).Echo power spectrum obtained using solution 8. This spectrum is a weighted sum of 17 runs at 1 Hz resolution.

Setups
Due to the primary's rotation period and diameter, we are expecting a bandwidth of about 160 Hz. For the secondary, we are expecting a bandwidth of of roughly 6 Hz. The standard 10 and 11 usec setups below will put about 13 Doppler bins on the asteroid. CW setup: TX polarization RCP RCV polarization LCP & RCP Frequency hops: no hopping Bandwidth: 5000 Hz TXoffset +500 Hz FFT 5000 for 1 Hz resolution Ranging setups: --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10-usec baud 10 usec code 127 PRP 1270 usec FFT 64 ncoh 1 bandwidth 787 Hz resolution 12.3 Hz TXOFF +100 Hz (echo in bin 32 + 8 = 40) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11-usec baud 11 usec code 127 PRP 1397 usec FFT 64 ncoh 1 bandwidth 716 Hz resolution 11.2 Hz TXOFF +100 Hz (echo in bin 32 + 9 = 41) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1-usec baud 1 usec code 255 FFT 128 ncoh 1 bandwidth 3921.6 Hz resolution 30.6 Hz TXOFF +500 Hz Time delay extent: 38250 meters The primary of 1999 HF1 is large enough that 1 usec would be imaging. The SNRs probably won't be strong enough. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
