Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: (159402) 1999 AP10
1999 AP10 was discovered on 1999 January 14 by LINEAR.
This asteroid has an absolute magnitude of 16.1, a rotation period of 7.9 hours,
and a lightcurve amplitude of about 0.4 magnitudes that suggests a moderately elongated shape.
Arecibo delay-Doppler imaging in 2009 led by M. Brozovic revealed an object
about 2 km in diameter whose leading edge is rounded at some longitudes
but has flat regions and a more tapered appearance at others.
This asteroid will approach within 0.0807 au on 2020 October 19 and we
are expecting SNRs at Goldstone that should be strong enough for
delay-Doppler imaging. The SNRs at Arecibo will be much stronger and sufficient for
imaging at Arecibo's finest range resolution of 7.5 m/pixel.
Observations at Goldstone are scheduled on only one date: October 24.
Observations will are not scheduled at Arecibo
following failure of an auxiliary cable in August, 2020.
1999 AP10 will be brighter than 17th magnitude from August 2020-February 2021, will brighten to 13th magnitude
in October, and will thus be an excellent target for photometry. This lengthy apparition provides an important
opportunity to estimate the asteroid's pole direction, which is not known, and to refine estimates of
the rotation period. Pole directions are known for less than 100 near-Earth asteroids, so there's
a significant knowledge gap, and in addition, the pole direction will facilitate 3D shape estimation
using radar data and lightcurves. 1999 AP10 will move more than 130 degrees while its visual magnitude
is brighter than 17.
The 2020 Earth flyby is the closest by this asteroid until after the year 2500.
Goldstone Radar Data from Near-Earth Asteroid 1999 AP10
Echo power spectrum from 1999 AP10 obtained on October 24, 2020. The resolution is 2.0 Hz.
The bandwidth of ~18 Hz and the 7.91 h rotatation period place a *lower* bound of 1.4 km on
the maximum pole-on breadth.
Delay-Doppler images of 1999 AP10 obtained on October 24, 2020. The resolution is 75 m x 1.0 Hz.
Range increases down and Doppler frequency increases to the right.
Time increases from left to right and top to bottom. Some images have a visible extent of
at least 11 rows between the leading and trailing edges, suggesting a diameter of at least 1.6 km
if this object is spheroidal.
