Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: Asteroids 1997 XR2, 1998 XB, 2016 UY56, 2002 QF15, Heracles, and 2009 MS
This is a planning page for Goldstone radar observations of near-Earth asteroids 1997 XR2, 1998 XB, 2016 UY56, 2002 QF15, Heracles, and 2009 MS in November 2016. 1998 XB 1998 XB is one of the most slowly rotating near-Earth asteroids known. Its rotation period is about 510 hours (Pravec et al.) and it has a large lightcurve amplitude of about 1 magnitude, which probably indicates that the shape is highly elongated. An optical albedo of 0.11 was estimated by Thomas et al. (2011, 2014) from observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope. If we adopt an optical albedo of 0.11, then the absolute magnitude of 16.2 suggests a diameter of about 2.3 km. The spectral class is in the SQ complex (Binzel et al. 2004; DeMeo et al. 2014; Thomas et al. 2014). 1998 XB will be a strong target at Goldstone and Arecibo despite the fact that the closest approach on November 15 is relatively distant at 0.12 au. We are expecting SNRs strong enough for detailed delay-Doppler imaging at a resolution of at least 1/8 usec. The slow rotation will provide one snapshot per day with about 15-20 deg of rotation between tracks on consecutive days. The Goldstone observations are scheduled on seven dates between Nov. 12-19 that straddle the closest approach and when the asteroid is too far south for Arecibo to track. Observations are likely on at least several dates at Arecibo but the schedule is not yet available. 1998 XB was discovered by the Beijing Schmidt CCD Asteroid Program on 1998 Dec. 1. This asteroid was observed with radar in 2012 at Arecibo at a distance of about 0.37 au. The approach in 2016 will be about three times closer so the SNRs will be roughly 80 times stronger. 1997 XR2 1997 XR2 was discovered by LINEAR in December 1997. This asteroid will approach within 0.048 au (18.5 lunar distances) on November 18. This object has not been observed by radar previously and little is known about its physical properties. Its absolute magnitude of 20.9 suggests a diameter of roughly 0.2 km but otherwise we know nothing about this object. 1997 XR2 is on NASA's list of potential human mission targets so any information we can obtain on its physical properties is very important. Time is scheduled for Goldstone observations on five days between November 15 - 19, mostly on dates when the view periods overlap those also scheduled for 1998 XB. We will probably devote most of this time to 1998 XB, which will be much stronger. 1997 XR2 is also classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the Minor Planet Center. 2016 UY56 2016 UY56 was discovered on 2016 Oct 29 by the Catalina Sky Survey near Tucson, AZ. This object has an absolute magnitude of 23.8 that suggests a diameter within a factor of two of 60 meters. Otherwise we know nothing about its physical properties. 2016 UY56 will approach within about 7 lunar distances on November 18 when it should be detectable at Goldstone. The view periods overlap time previously scheduled for other asteroids, so we added UY56 to the schedule on Nov. 15, 17, and 19. Unless this object is a slow rotator, the SNRs probably will not be strong enough for detailed imaging. This object would be a strong imaging target at Arecibo but currently observations are not yet scheduled there. The plane-of-sky pointing uncertainties are still large but are virtually certain to shrink dramatically by the time of the radar observations. 2002 QF15 2002 QF15 was discovered on August 27, 2002 by LINEAR. This object will make a distant approach at 0.16 au in November and it will be a relatively weak target at Goldstone. 2002 QF15 has been observed by radar twice previously, in 2003 and 2006, and by obtaining a third radar detection in 2016, we may detect the signature of the Yarkovsky effect on the asteroid's motion. If successful, this will yield an estimate of the asteroid's mass. This asteroid is a slow rotator with a period of 23.5 hours and a lightcurve amplitude of at least 0.3 magnitudes. Spectroscopic observations suggest either an S- or V-class taxonomy. Previous radar observations yielded a circular polarization ratio of 0.23+-0.02 that is consistent with the S-class but not with the V-class (which have much higher circular polarization ratios). One track is scheduled at Goldstone on November 19 and another is scheduled at Arecibo on Nov. 15. This object was observed by the NEOWISE mission in late October. A diameter estimate may become available soon. 2002 QF15 is classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid." Heracles Heracles was discovered by C. S. Shoemaker at Palomar in November 1991. It is named after the famous hero from Greek mithology. Arecibo observations of Heracles in December of 2011 led to the discovery that this is a binary system. Multiple estimates of the diameter of Heracles are available and range between 3.6 km - 4.8 km. Consequently, Heracles may be the second largest binary in the near-Earth asteroid after 1866 Sisyphus, which is about 8 km in diameter. We hope that the Goldstone radar observations in 2016 will help resolve discrepancies in the dimensions of this system. Four tracks are scheduled at Goldstone between November 26-29. The SNRs are weak, so Heracles will primarily be a CW target. We hope to to detect the satellite. This object is also observable at Arecibo in December after the Goldstone tracks end, although the detailed schedule at Arecibo is not yet available. SNRs at Arecibo will be strong enough for coarse resolution imaging at Arecibo and the satellite should be easily detectable. This apparition will also be favorable for obtaining lightcurves, vis-IR spectroscopy, and IR radiometry. Future encounters by Heracles will occur at 0.167 au in July 2034 and 0.058 au in July 2039. 2009 MS 2009 MS was discovered by the Mt. Lemon Survey on 2009 June 19. This asteroid has been observed by NEOWISE, and the IR data suggest that this asteroid is not optically dark. Its estimated diameter is 1.5 km and albedo = 0.23. We do not know any other physical characteristics. This object will approach within 0.070 au on November 30 when it should be detectable at Goldstone at SNRs strong enough for obtaining CW data and ranging measurements but probably insufficient for delay-Doppler imaging. Time is scheduled on three dates between Nov. 26-29. The Arecibo schedule is not available yet, but the tracks will likely occur at the same time as the Goldstone observations. The next comparable approach to Earth at 0.07 au occurs in December 2087. Photometric observations and prior to the radar observations would be very helpful. The Minor Planet Center has designated 2009 MS as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid."
