Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: 1998 WT24, 2003 EB50, 2003 SD220, 2015 XC, 2015 XX128, 2015 XN55, 2015 MW53, 1995 YR1, and 2008 CM
This is a planning page for nine near-Earth asteroids in December 2015. 1998 WT24 1998 WT24 will approach within 0.028 au (10.9 LD) on 2015 Dec 11 when it will be a very strong imaging target. This object has been studied extensively during an even closer flyby in December 2001 when, at the time, it was the strongest SNR radar target ever detected. Busch et al. (2007) reported the results of the 2001 observations, the spin state, and a detailed 3D shape model. The asteroid has an effective diameter of 415 m and is characterized by a rounded shape with at two large concavities on one hemisphere. The asteroid also has a pronounced angular edge, a high circular polarization ratio indicative of a rough near-surface, and a rotation period of 3.7 h. This was one of the first near-Earth asteroids to show possible evidence for a boulder in delay-Doppler radar images. The 2001 images show a persistent radar-bright spot that we expect to resolve in greater detail in 2015. The 2015 encounter will be close enough for detailed radar imaging at a resolution of 3.75 m/pixel, five times finer than was possible at Goldstone in 2001. Consequently, we may see features that were not visible previously. Some of these observations may utilize bistatic 40 MHz imaging in conjunction with Arecibo and Green Bank. We will update the schedule below when the Goldstone schedule is known. We will also attempt to observe 1998 WT24 in Australia using the S-band transmitter on DSS-43 and the 64 m Parkes antenna to receive. The principal goal is a proof-of-concept demonstration. 2003 EB50 2003 EB50 will be a moderately strong radar target in December 2015. This object has an unusaully slow rotation period of 27.2 h and a lightcurve amplitude of 0.7 mag, suggesting an elongated shape. Such slow rotation is often a signature of non-principal axis rotation, the origins of which are not well understood. The absolute magnitude of 16.4 suggests a diameter of roughly 1.7 km. Even though the encounter distance of 0.125 au is rather large, the slow rotation and relatively large diameter indicate that this object should be detectable at Goldstone. We are expecting SNRs strong enough for CW observations and ranging but probably not detailed delay-Doppler imaging. 2003 SD220 2003 SD220 is on NASA's NHATS list of potential human-accessible targets, so observations of this object are particularly important. The 2015 apparition is the first of five encounters by this object in the next 12 years when it will be close enough for a radar detection. By obtaining radar ranging measurements at each observing opportunity, it may be possible to detect non-gravitational perturbations due to the Yarkovsky effect. If so, then we can obtain an estimate of the object's mass, information that is invaluable for understanding the object's bulk density and internal structure. This is an S-class object but nothing was known about it other than its absolute magnitude of 16.9 until November 2015, when new observations were reported by Joe Masiero and Sarah Sonnett using NEOWISE data and Brian Warner using photometry. 2003 SD220 was detected by the NEOWISE spacecraft on 2015 Nov. 16. Preliminary results reported by Sonnett and Masiero suggest the diameter is roughly 0.7 km; if true, then this object has a very high optical albedo. B. Warner reports a preliminary rotation period of 12 days (!), so this is going to be a significantly stronger radar target than we expected and imaging seems likely. Warner also obtained a lightcurve amplitude of about 2 magnitudes, so we are expecting to see a very elongated shape. The SNRs at Goldstone during the 2015 apparition will be strong enough for imaging. These observations will also provide an important preview for the encounter in 2018 when the the asteroid will make a much closer approach within 0.019 au and when the SNRs will be strong enough for the highest resolution imaging that is available. The close approach is on Dec 24 at 0.073 au (28 lunar distances). 1995 YR1 1995 YR1 was discovered by Spacewatch in December 1995. Nothing is known about this object other than its absolute magnitude of 20.2, which suggests a diameter of roughly 300 m. This object will be a moderately strong radar target shortly before Christmas but probably not strong enough for detailed imaging. The close approach is on Dec. 23 at 0.043 au (17 lunar distances). 2008 CM 2008 CM will approach within 0.058 au (23 lunar distances) on Dec 29, when the SNRs should be strong enough for delay-Doppler imaging. This object has an absolute magnitude of 17.3 suggesting that the diameter is within a factor of two of 1.2 km. The rotation period is 3.054 h and the lightcurve amplitude is 0.5 mag (Warner et al. 2014), so the shape is moderately elongated. Nothing else is known about its physical properties. Due to its rapid sky motion, this object is observable at Goldstone on dates before and after it can be observed at Arecibo. 2015 MW53 2015 MW53 is a target-of-opportunity that was discovered on 2015 June 18 by Pan-STARRS 1. The view period for this object overlaps time already scheduled for 1998 WT24 on December 17 so we have added it to the schedule The absolute magnitude of 21.4 suggests a diameter within a factor of two of 170 m but otherwise nothing is known about the physical properties of this object. The signal-to-noise ratios suggest that this will be a weak target so we do not expect to obtain detailed delay-Doppler images. Our primary goals are to detect it, improve the orbit, and estimate its disk-integrated radar properties. The close approach is on December 18 at 0.046 au (18 lunar distances). 2015 XC 2015 XC was discovered by the Catalina Sky Survey on 2015 December 1. This is a small object with an absolute magnitude of 25.2, which suggests a diameter of roughly 30 meters. This object will approach within 0.0086 au (3.3 lunar distances) on December 8. Nothing else is known about its physical properties. 2015 XC is on NASA's NHATS list of potential human mission targets. 2015 XX128 2015 XX128 will approach within 2.4 lunar distances on December 14. This object has an absolute magnitude of 26.2 so it's roughly 20 meters in diameter. It was discovered by Pan-STARRS1 on December 5. Nothing else is known about its physical properties. Due to the close approach, this will be a strong radar target at Goldstone and we have requested time already scheduled for observations of 1998 WT24. 2015 XX128 is on NASA's NHATS list of potential human mission targets. 2015 XN55 2015 XN55 was discovered by Pan-STARRS 1 on December 4. This object is roughly 10 m in diameter and it will approach within 2.5 lunar distances on December 15, when it will be a moderately strong radar target at Goldstone. The view periods partially overlap time already allocated for 1998 WT24 so we have added this object to the schedule using existing time. 2015 XN55 is on NASA's NHATS list of potential human mission targets. The Minor Planet Center has classified 1998 WT24, 2003 SD220, 2015 MW53, 1995 YR1, and 2008 CM as "Potentially Hazardous Asteroids."
