65803 (1996 GT) Planning
65803 (1996 GT) was discovered by J. Montani and J.V. Scotti at Spacewatch on April 11, 1996. 1996 GT will approach within 0.048 AU (18.5 lunar distances) on November 12. It will be a strong radar target and we hope to image it with a range resolution as high as 1/8 usec. Its absolute magnitude of 17.7 suggests that it is within a factor of two of about 0.9 km in diameter. The rotation period, optical albedo, and taxonomic class are unknown. 1996 GT will be well-positioned for photometry and vis-IR spectroscopy prior to the radar tracks, so it is possible that the rotation period and taxonomic class will become known before the Goldstone tracks start.
Due to its size and the proximity of its orbit to that of Earth, 1996 GT has been classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the International Astronomical Union's Minor Planet Center. These will be combined Goldstone and Arecibo observations. Goldstone observations are scheduled on November 13-15, which includes one day (Nov. 13) that overlaps with 1990 OS and 1937 UB (Hermes). Arecibo time has been scheduled for November 22-25.
