Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: 1993 EA, 2003 CY18, and 2022 HT2

Background

5693 1993 EA
1993 EA was discovered by Spacewatch in March, 1993. This object has a relatively rapid rotation period
of 2.5 hours and low lightcurve amplitude of 0.1 mag, which suggests a shape with low elongation.
Vis-IR observations indicate a Q/Sq spectral class that is common in the near-Earth population.

This object is a rapid rotator with a low lightcurve amplitude. Pravec et al. (2006)
reported that about 2/3 of such objects in the near-Earth population have a satellite,
so one of our principal goals is to investigate whether 1993 EA is a binary system.

The diameter has not been measured as far as we know, but its absolute magnitude of
16.7 and its spectral class suggest a diameter of roughly 1.4 km.

1993 EA will approach within 0.069 au on May 28 when it should be a moderately strong
radar target suitable for imaging at 75 m or possibly 37.5 m resolutions.

This asteroid has not been observed with radar previously.

1993 EA is designated as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the Minor Planet Center.

2003 CY18 2003 CY18 was discovered by JPL's Near-Earth Asteroid Tracking (NEAT) program on Haleakala on February 9, 2003. 2003 CY18 will make a relatively distant approach to Earth at 0.09 au in late May, 2022. The absolute magnitude of 18.3 suggests a diameter within a factor of two of 800 meters. 2003 CY18 was observed by radar at Arecibo in 2005. The images show a relatively slow rotator with a pronounced flat facet and a bandwidth of about 5 Hz (when the transmitter frequency is converted to 8560 MHz). The Arecibo images establish a lower bound on the long axis of at least 300 meters. A precise estimate of the rotation period is not available.
2022 HT2 2022 HT2 is a target-of-opportunity that will overlap view periods already scheduled for 2003 CY18 on June 3 and 4. This asteroid was discovered by Pan-STARRS 2 on April 26 and it will approach within about 12 lunar distances on May 30. The asteroid's absolute magnitude of 21.0 suggests a diameter within a factor of two of 200 meters but otherwise nothing is known about its physical properties. The close approach will occur when the asteroid is too far south for Goldstone to track, so observations on June 3 and 4 will occur when the asteroid is moving away from Earth. We are expecting signal-to-noise ratios strong enough for CW observations and ranging but probably not strong enough for detailed delay-Doppler imaging. 2022 HT2 is classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the Minor Planet Center.

Goldstone Radar Echoes from Asteroid 1993 EA

Echo power spectrum from 1993 EA obtained on May 24.
Echo power in standard deviations is plotted as a function of Doppler frequency.
Solid and dashed curves denote opposite-sense circular and same-sense circular polarizations.
The frequency resolution is 1 Hz and the bandwidth of the echo is about 42 Hz.
The bandwidth and rotation period place a lower bound on the maximum pole-on extent
of about 1 km.

Echo power spectrum obtained on May 29. This is a weighted sum of 64 runs obtained
with solution 383. The bandwidth is about 43 Hz.
This is an integration spanning 2.56 h or slightly more than one rotation.

Goldstone Radar Echoes from Asteroid 2003 CY18

Echo power spectrum from 2003 CY18 obtained on May 27. The frequency resolution is 0.2 Hz and the bandwidth is about 0.8 Hz, which suggests relatively slow rotation. Echo power spectrum from 2003 CY18 obtained on May 29. The frequency resolution is 0.033 Hz and the bandwidth is about 0.5 Hz. Delay-Doppler image of 2003 CY18 obtained on June 1. Resolution is 18.75 m x 0.07 Hz. Range increases down and Doppler frequency increases to the right. The visible extent of the echo appears to be at least seven rows. The image is a weighted sum of 41 transmit-receive cycles. Collage of images obtained on June 3 between 09:18:49-13:47:49 UT. Each panel is a weighted sum of 20 or 21 runs. Resolution is 18.75 m x 0.07 Hz. The asteroid exhibits a modest amount of rotation in this sequence and shows evidence for a concavity on the leading edge.

Goldstone Radar Echoes from Asteroid 2022 HT2

Echo power spectrum from 2022 HT2 obtained on June 3. The frequency resolution is 1.0 Hz and the bandwidth is about 4 Hz.
