Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: (7753) 1988 XB, 2017 WJ16, and 2000 WO107


Background


7753 1988 XB

1988 XB was discovered by Y. Yoshima in Japan on December 5, 1988. 

Its rotation period, lightcurve amplitude, and pole direction are unknown.  
1988 XB is about 1 km in diameter and it is an optically-dark B-class object.  

1988 XB will approach within 0.066 au on November 22 when SNRs at Goldstone
should be strong enough for moderate-resolution imaging at 37.5 m or 75 m resolutions.

Observations are scheduled at Goldstone on 14 dates between November 17-December 1,
although time on many of those dates will be share with 2000 WO107 and 2017 WJ16.

1988 XB is classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the Minor Planet Center.


2017 WJ16 2017 WJ16 is a small object roughly 40 meters in diameter that will approach within 5 lunar distances (0.013 au) on November 23, 2020. This asteroid was discovered by the Mt. Lemmon Survey in Novemer, 2017. Most of its physical properties are unknown. Observations are scheduled at Goldstone on November 20-25. Orbital uncertainties are currently large and we need help with astrometry in order to observe it with radar. Fortunately, this object should be recovered in mid-November, so the orbital uncertainties are likely be small by the time of the Goldstone observations.
153201 2000 WO107 2000 WO107 is an X-class object discovered in November, 2000 by LINEAR. This object has an unusually low perihelion distance of only 0.20 au that is inside the orbit of Mercury. As such, general relativistic effects could become evident with ranging measurements over a long enough interval spanning a number of years. The close perihelion might also provide a potential probe of solar oblateness. 2000 WO107 also makes close approaches to Venus and Mercury, so disentangling these effects could be complicated. The rotation period, lightcurve amplitude, and pole direction are unknown. 2000 WO107 will approach within 0.029 au (11 lunar distances) on November 29, 2020. The SNRs should be strong enough for detailed delay-Doppler imaging at a resolution of 18.75 m/pixel or finer. Goldstone observations are scheduled on November 27 - December 1, dates that straddle the closest approach. Observations by NASA's NEOWISE spacecraft indicate a diameter of 0.51 km and an optial albedo of 0.13. The X-spectral class is ambiguous: optically bright (E-class), moderately bright and metallic (M-class), and optically-dark (P-class) objects can all be included in the X-class in the absence of information about the albedo. The albedo of this object is available but is inconsistent with the highly-reflective E-class, so the implication is that this object is either in the M-class or the P-class. M-class objects are thought to be metallic, which are rare in the near-Earth population, so these observations have the potential to settle the important question regarding the composition of this object. If 2000 WO107 is actually metallic, then it could have an unusually high radar albedo and the signal-to-noise ratios could be substantially higher than the estimates below. The 2020 approach is the closest by this asteroid until November, 2040, when it will fly by within 0.021 au. 2000 WO107 is classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the Minor Planet Center.

Arecibo SNRs assume Ptx = 900 kW, Tsys = 25 K, and D = 1.1 km.  This does not
account for the reduction in gain due to damaged sustained from Hurricane Maria
or from lower transmitter powers most recently in use.

Arecibo is offline due to a cable failure in Aug. 2020 and the date when it will
return to service is unknown.
