2012 Goldstone Radar Observations of (4179) Toutatis
Dec. 12 and 13 Goldstone 4-meter-resolution Radar Movies of Toutatis |
Dec. 14 Goldstone 7.5-meter-resolution Radar Movie of Toutatis |
Sequences of Goldstone delay-Doppler radar images of Toutatis from the 2012 observing campaign. In each image, range increases down and Doppler frequency increases toward the right, so rotation is counterclockwise. Each image from Dec. 4-7 has the same range-Doppler extents, but later images do not (at least not yet...stay tuned...we plan do to this once things settle down). December 4: Weighted sum of 32 runs. Toutatis is an irregular and very elongated object. The group of bright pixels at the bottom right is an echo from a topographic feature that's barely visible along the radar terminator; it's not a satellite.
December 6: Weighted sum of 35 runs. This is a "broadside" view more or less along one of the asteroid's shorter axes.
December 7: Toutatis appears nearly end-on in this view, which shows a weighted sum of 49 runs. Due to the irregular shape and it slow non-principal axis spin state, the appearance of Toutatis in radar images can change dramatically from day to day.
December 8: Two images of Toutatis obtained over an inteval of about two hours. Although Toutatis is a very slow rotator, a small amount of rotation is evident between the two frames. Considerable detail is visible in the images. Note that the resolution is 7.5 m/row, 2.5x finer than on the previous three days. The improved resolution is a consequence of the asteroid's smaller distance and thus higher signal-to-noise ratio.
December 9: Two images showing a modest amount of rotation over an interval of almost three hours. Because of the elongated shape of Toutatis and the radar shadows it casts, the lower part of the echo appears almost disconnected from the top even though they are in contact. Each day Toutatis looks different because the shape is irregular and because it is in a non-principal axis spin state, which means that the instantaneous spin vector is changing.
December 10: Two-panel collage that shows obvious rotation by Toutatis. The entire interval spans about 4 hours and 15 minutes, with a lengthy gap in between the imaging while we were observing with other configurations. There's a pronounced facet on the left side. The echo looks split into two sections due to the irregular and elongated shape of the asteroid and due to radar shadows cast by the large lobe at the top. As the asteroid rotated, the more distant lobe nearly vanished behind the shadow cast by the front.
December 11: Two images obtained a few hours apart at a resolution of 7.5 m x 0.025 Hz. Due to the 3+ hour gap between the two images, a modest amount of rotation is visible. A small region at the bottom that was barely illuminated in the first image rotated into view in the second. On Dec. 11 there's a gap between the Toutatis images because Goldstone was observing the Jovian moon Ganymede.
Dec. 12 and 13: The link above will show a movie of Toutatis rotating over intervals of about six hours on Dec. 12 and about 5 hours on Dec. 13. These are the days when the asteroid was closest to Earth and when the radar signal-to-noise ratios were strongest. Consequently, we used the highest range resolution available, 3.75 meters/pixel, to image the asteroid. Although relatively brief, the images show evidence for the complex, non-principal axis rotation of the asteroid and the high resolution reveals considerable detail including some small spots that may be boulder or other small topographic features. These are the highest range resolution images of Toutatis ever obtained during the six times since 1992 that we've imaged it with radar.
Dec. 14: Sequence of images with a resolution of 7.5 m x 0.025 Hz obtained on December 14, two days after the closest approach. The asteroid's distance was 0.048 AU (18.7 lunar distances). Each frame is a weighted sum of 10 runs. The signal strength was somewhat weaker than on Dec. 13 so we used a coarser range resolution of 7.5 m/px vs. 3.75 m/px. The sequence of images is shorter than on Dec. 12 and 13 but still shows evidence for complex rotation.
Dec. 15: This figure shows a weighted sum of 9 runs at a resolution of 0.05 usec x 0.025 Hz. By Dec. 15 the distance between Toutatis and Earth had increased to 0.051 AU and the radar SNRs had dropped enough that we backed off to a coarser range resolution than we used on Dec. 12 and 13 when the asteroid was closest. Had we not done so the echo would have been spread out more in range and the SNR per pixel been visibly weaker.
Dec. 18: Weighted sum of 3 runs at a resolution of 18.75 m x 0.025 Hz. We had a very short track and obtained only three imaging runs before we had to reconfigure for radar speckle tracking using the VLA as a receiver. Even with such a short integration, the summed image shows both lobes of the asteroid and features on the surface. The distance on Dec. 18 was 0.062 AU and the SNR/run only about 1/3 of the peak on Dec. 12.
Dec. 19: Science while you wait: This is an image of Toutatis obtained while the track is still in progress. This is a weighted sum of 16 runs with a resolution of 18.75 m x 0.038 Hz obtained during a snowstorm at DSS-14.
4179 Toutatis was discovered by C. Pollas at Caussols (France) in January of 1989. Toutatis has been making close approaches to Earth at four-year intervals since its discovery, and as a result, it was studied extensively with radar in 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, and 2008, and also at a variety of optical and infrared wavelengths in 1992-1993. Toutatis is an irregular and very elongated object. It's also a very slow, non-principal axis rotator characterized by 5.4-day rotation about the long axis and 7.3-day precession of the long axis about the angular momentum vector. A summary of earlier observations of Toutatis is available online at: http://echo.jpl.nasa.gov/asteroids/4179_Toutatis/toutatis.html Toutatis will approach within 0.0463 AU of Earth (18 lunar distances) on December 12, 2012 when it will be a very strong radar target at Goldstone and Arecibo. We are planning an extensive campaign of radar observations at both telescopes between December 4 - 22. We are also planning radar speckle tracking observations using the antennas in the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) as receivers. The radar speckle observations should provide particularly tight constraints on the spin vector and help improve the shape model. Scheduling update: due to an equipment failure, radar observations of Toutatis at Arecibo were cancelled. Previous radar images of Toutatis achieved range resolutions as fine as 7.5 m/pixel at Arecibo and 18.75 m/pixel at Goldstone. In 2012, we will observe Toutatis with the new 4-meter-resolution chirp imaging system at Goldstone, which could reveal finer detail than has previously been visible. In addition, Toutatis will be the target of a flyby by the Chinese Chang'e 2 spacecraft on December 13, 2012 (Previous reports that the flyby would occur on January 6, 2013 are apparently incorrect). Chang'e 2 was originally launched to study the Moon but was diverted in April, 2012 for the asteroid encounter. We hope to use new radar images obtained in late 2012 to predict the orientation of Toutatis during the Chang'e 2 flyby. Evidently the spacecraft flyby will occur at a distance of about 300 km on the sunward side of Toutatis. The next opportunity for radar imaging of Toutatis will occur in late 2016 and early 2017 during an encounter within 0.251 AU when it should be possible to get radar images at Arecibo with resolutions of about 150 meters per pixel. The next time Toutatis will approach at least this close to Earth is in November of 2069 when the asteroid will fly by at a distance of only 0.0198 AU (7.7 lunar distances). Five Toutatis tracks occur on the same day as tracks with Europa/Ganymede and are indicated below. On Dec. 11 and 15, we hope to have enough time to start with Toutatis, do Europa/Ganymede, and then return to Toutatis. On Dec. 18 and 22, we will start with Europa and Ganymede and then finish with Toutatis. On Dec. 21 and 22 we also intend to devote a fraction of our time to observing 99942 Apophis. Other days are scheduled for observations of Apophis in January.

During each track, we'll observe Toutatis for about 90 minutes and then switch to the main-belt asteroids, so we won't use the full view periods listed above. Although the SNRs at Arecibo are stronger on earlier dates, Toutatis wasn't scheduled due to conflicts with a World Day and with Space VLBI.
The orbit of Toutatis is very well known and has unusually small uncertainties due to the extensive suite of previous radar observations and shape modeling. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - From Jon Giorgini, 2012 December 8: Including the new DSS-14 astrometry with the 4049 optical measurements (1934-Feb-10 to 2012-Nov-25) and prior radar from 2008, 2004, 2000, 1996 and 1992 (28 delay and 28 Doppler measurements), 4179 Toutatis orbit solution #442 was estimated. An updated planetary ephemeris (DE424) was used. The improved planetary perturber positions and masses appear to reduce systematic errors affecting s439, now making it possible to fit Toutatis' tight 20-year radar dataset simultaneously, including last night's problematic 2004 and 2008 delay measurements. s442 post-fit residuals are given below. None of the slight outliers marked with asterisks are statistically significant. Experiments with various non-gravitational acceleration models have not produced a compelling result with this dataset, though it is not ruled out. Predict files on aardvark have been updated to provide s442 variants. Differencing s442-s439 at the start of tonight's track: 14f-14-14 TRANSMITTER: STATION #14, RECEIVER: STATION #14 RECEIVER U.T. If you do an update during the experiment, it may take 3 iterations for convergence before everything settles, even if the correction is within the above standard dynamical model statistics. - - - - -
