Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: 2100 Ra-Shalom and 2011 DU
Ra-Shalom Ra-Shalom was discovered by E. F. Helin at Palomar in September 1978. Its name derives from the Egyptian sun god Ra, a symbol of enlightenment and life, and the Hebrew word shalom, for peace, because the Egyptian-Israeli peace talks were underway at the time of the discovery. Ra-Shalom was one of the first Aten-class asteroids discovered, and due to repeated close encounters with Earth, this object has been studied extensively with photometry, spectroscopy, IR radiometry, and radar. Radar observations in 1981, 1984, 2000, and 2003 have been reported by Ostro et al. 1984, Shepard et al. 2000, and Shepard et al. 2008. Shepard et al. 2008 estimated the 3D shape and rotation period and obtained dimensions of 2.96 x 2.46 x 1.95 km (+- 10%), an effective diameter of 2.3 km, a rotation period of P = 19.793 h, an optical albedo of 0.13, and a very high radar albedo of 0.36. Durech et al. 2012 reported a sidereal rotation period of 19.8201 +-0.0004 h and a pole direction of (lambda, beta) = (313, -45). The pole direction is consistent with constraints estimated by Shepard et al. 2008 but Durech et al. concluded that the pole is still not well constrained. The spectral class of Ra-Shalom has a complicated history and a number of taxonomic types have been reported. Most recently, Shepard et al. 2008 assigned Ra-Shalom to the K-class, but others have suggested the C and S classes. Multiple estimates for the thermal inertia are also available. Due to the lengthy arc of optical and radar astrometry, Chesley et al. (2016) report a 4.7-sigma detection of the Yarkovsky effect for this object. In principle, this could enable estimation of the asteroid's mass and bulk density. If we obtain new radar astrometry during the 2016 encounter, the SNR of the Yarkovsky detection could increase substantially to the point where mass estimation becomes feasible. Previous radar observations apparently viewed the asteroid at nearly equatorial orientations, but in 2016 the subradar latitude during some of the Goldstone tracks will be about -40 deg, which may enable us to place more stringent constraints on the asteroid's pole direction, polar axis, and thus on its effective diameter, volume, and bulk density. Eight tracks are scheduled at Goldstone between September 26-October 3. The SNRs should be strong enough to estimate ranges and obtain coarse-resolution delay-Doppler imaging. One track is scheduled at Arecibo on September 15 and additional observations are possible during a monthly survey night on Sep. 8. This apparition will also be favorable for obtaining more lightcurves, vis-IR spectroscopy, and IR radiometry. New photometry and radar imaging will help constrain possible spin state changes through the YORP effect. 2011 DU 2011 DU was discovered by Spacewatch on 2011 Feburary 22. Nothing is known about its physical properties other than its absolute magnitude of 21.0, which suggests a diameter of about 0.2 km. This object will approach within 0.039 au on October 6 when it should be detectable at Goldstone at SNRs strong enough for obtaining CW data and ranging measurements but probably insufficient for delay-Doppler imaging. Time is scheduled on five dates between Oct. 3-8. One track is scheduled at Arecibo on September 23. The Arecibo track will occur before the tracks at Goldstone so we should know considerably more about this object prior to the first day of Goldstone observations. 2011 DU is on NASA's NHATS list of potential human mission targets, so any information we can obtain about its physical properties is very important. The Minor Planet Center has designated 2011 DU as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid."
