99942 Apophis 2013 Goldstone Radar Observations Planning
99942 Apophis is one of the most important near-Earth asteroids ever discovered. It will make a very close Earth approach on Friday, April 13, 2029 when it will pass within 0.1 lunar distances, which is only a few Earth radii above Earth's surface. This will be the closest approach by something this large currently known. Apophis was discovered in June of 2004, observed briefly, and then lost until it was serendipitously recovered in December of 2004. It was immediately evident that the asteroid would make an unusually close approach to Earth in 2029, and initial calcluations placed the probability of an impact as high as about 3%. Subsequent precovery optical observations showed that there was zero chance of impact in 2029. Radar observations at Arecibo in January, 2005 revealed a bias in the precovery optical observations and showed and that the approach in 2029 would be significantly closer than previously thought--only a few Earth radii--but still too distant for an impact. The 2029 approach will be close enough that terrestrial tides should alter the asteroid's spin state. There is still a tiny chance of an impact in 2036; the principal source of uncertainty is the acceleration due to the Yarkovsky effect, a non-gravitational effect that is a function of the asteroid's rotation period, pole direction, thermal properties, mass, shape, and dimensions. It's likely that radar astrometry in 2013 will shrink the uncertainties sufficiently to completely rule out an impact in the 2030s (Giorgini et al. 2008). For all these reasons scientific interest in Apophis is acute and it's very important to learn as much as we can about this object when it gets close enough for physical observations in late 2012 and early 2013. Apophis has been observed at a variety of optical wavelengths and some of its key physical properties have been estimated. Infrared radiometry by Delbo et al. (2007) suggests that the diameter is about 270 meters and that the optical albedo is about 0.3. Vis-IR spectroscopy reported by Binzel et al. (2009) places Apophis in the Sq-class. Photometry obtained by Behrend et al. (unpublished) revealed a slow rotation period of 30.4 hours and a large lightcurve amplitude of ~1.0 mag that suggests a very elongated shape. A sequence of radar ranging astrometry in 2005, 2013, and during the flyby in 2021, _may_ enable us to detect the acceleration due to the Yarkovsky effect and allow us to estimate the mass and bulk density. This isn't guaranteed, but we have a non-negligible chance. In addition, observations that provide precise constraints on the spin state could help reveal changes due to Earth tides following the flyby in 2029. Apophis will approach from the south and will become detectable at Goldstone in late November. Apophis will be a weak target at Goldstone and the SNRs will probably be sufficient for only CW observations and perhaps coarse-resolution ranging. We do not expect to obtain detailed delay-Doppler images in 2013. We are also planning to observe Apophis at Arecibo once it enters Arecibo's declination window in mid-February of 2013. Apophis will be observable at Arecibo after February 13. At that time Apophis will be well past the closest approach, but the SNRs at Arecibo should still be sufficient to obtain CW, ranging, and possibly 0.5 usec (75 meter) imaging observations. Due to the proximity of its orbit to Earth, Apophis is being considered as a potential target for both robotic and crewed spacecraft missions. Apophis has been classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" (PHA) by the IAU's Minor Planet Center. Apophis is also on the NHATS list of potentially accessible NEAs for human missions.

Using the echoes obtained at Goldstone as calibrators, it's likely that the SNRs at Arecibo
could be sufficiently strong for imaging at 30 meter resolution.

Apophis is a slow rotator with a period of 30.4 h and a diameter of about 0.27 km,
so if the view is equatorial, we should see a bandwidth of about 0.9 Hz. The lightcurve
amplitude indicates that Apophis is elongated so the bandwidth should vary considerably
as the asteroid spins. Due to the slow rotation period and the short duration of most of
the Goldstone tracks, we may not see the bandwidth change much during an individual track.
On January 8 we're going to do CW for the entire track.
