Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: 2016 CL264
2016 CL264 was discovered by Pan-STARRS 1 on 2016 Feb 12. It is classified as a Potentially Hazardous Asteroid (PHA) and it will approach within 23 lunar distances on August 8. Its absolute magnitude of 19.1 suggests that its diameter is within a factor of two of 500 m. If we assume a 2.1 h spin period, then the expected bandwidth at Goldstone should be between 10 and 40 Hz. Based on the expected SNRs we should be able to obtain echo power spectra and ranging measurements. The SNRs will probably not be a strong enough for imaging. The physical properties of this object are effectively unknown. The pointing uncertainties for this object are uncomfortably large for radar observations and 2016 CL246 will be within 60 deg of the Sun until August 4. After that the solar elongation will increase rapidly so the pointing uncertainties should be small enough before the Goldstone observations start on August 8. Update: new astrometry obtained at J95 on July 22-23 reduced the pointing uncertainties substantially. 2016 CL246 will be a good target for lightcurves and spectroscopy for observatories in the southern hemisphere.
