2013 ET Goldstone Radar Observations Planning
Sequence of Goldstone radar images of 2013 ET from March 10. The images span interval of 1.6 hours from 01:13-02:50 UT. Each frame has a resolution of 3.75 m x 0.015 Hz and is an integration of 240 seconds, but we double sampled, so each row corresponds to 1.875 meters and adjacent rows are correlated. Range increases down and Doppler frequency increases to the right so rotation is counterclockwise. The images reveal that 2013 ET is is an irregular and angular object with considerable structure even though it's only a few tens of meters in diameter.
2013 ET was discovered by the Catalina Sky Survey on March 3, 2013. We do not know anything about its physical characteristics except that its absolute magnitude of 23.1 suggests a diameer of ~75 m (within a factor of two). This asteroid will make a very close approach (2.5 lunar distances) to Earth on March 9 when it will be an outstanding radar target at Goldstone. We have secured two observing tracks at Goldstone: March 7 0330-0940 UTC March 10 0020-0250 UTC On Mar 10, we will observe in bistatic mode due to the very short round-trip-time (RTT). We may attempt some monostatic ranging on that date despite the short RTT. The asteroid is too far south for Arecibo to observe during the closest approach and it is unlikely that any observations will be scheduled even after the asteroid enters Arecibo's declination window on March 11. Optical astrometry, lightcurves, and spectroscopy are very much appreciated prior to our radar observations. 2013 ET will reach 15th magnitude and be an excellent optical target for a few days prior to the closest approach. After March 10 it wlll be too close to the Sun for optical observations. We'd like to thank the many observers who reported astrometry in response to our requests for help: it's been invaluable!
