2013 BV15 Goldstone Radar Observations Planning

Goldstone Radar Images of Asteroid 2013 BV15

Sequence (08:29-10:00 UT)) of radar images from 2013 February 12. Resolution = 3.75 m x 1.0 Hz.
The entire sequence spans 90 minutes and shows about three rotations by the asteroid.
2013 BV15 is clearly an irregular, elongated (preliminary estimate of the size is 60 x 30 m)
object with at least one distinct concavity.

Background

2013 BV15 was discovered by Pan-STARRS on January 17, 2013. The absolute magnitude
of 24.3 suggests a diameter within a factor of two of 45 meters.
Lightcurves obtained by Carl Hergenrother (Univ. of Arizona) indicate
a rotation period of 0.48 h and an amplitude of 0.7 mag, suggestive of an
elongated shape. The other physical properties of this object are unknown.

2013 BV15 will approach within 0.0095 AU (3.7 lunar distances) on Feb. 13. We're
going to observe it during time already scheduled for Camillo on Feb. 11 and 12 when the SNRs
should be sufficient to get a detection and while the asteroid is still far enough
north for Goldstone to track. After February 12, 2013 BV15 will move too far south
for Goldstone.

This asteroid should be a pretty strong target at Goldstone and we're cautiously
optimistic that we'll be able to obtain images, possibly with a resolution
as fine as 3.75 meters.

Setups

With a rotation period of ~0.5 hours, we're expecting a bandwidth in the realm of 10 Hz.

We're going to start with the CW setup below, which has a relatively wide bandwidth due
to the Doppler uncertainties in the current orbital solution.
This setup should resolve the echo in frequency and enable us to see an echo quickly.

Due to the very short round-trip time, we will NOT hop the transmitter.

TX polarization RCP
RCV polarization LCP & RCP
Frequency hops: no hops
Bandwidth: 8000 Hz
Sampling interval: 2500 x 0.1 usec
VME FFT for PSD files: 8192 for 0.98-Hz resolution
TX offset : +500 Hz
