2012 BX34 Goldstone Radar Observations Planning

Background


2012 BX34 was discovered by the Catalina Sky Survey on January 25, 2012, and it will make
a very close approach within 0.17 lunar distances (0.0004 AU) on January 27.  
We are planning to observe it on Jan. 27 using time previously scheduled for
observations of 433 Eros.  

The absolute magnitude of 27.5 suggests a diameter within a factor of two of about 10 meters, but
otherwise nothing is known about its physcial properties.  

2012 BX34 will be a strong radar target at Goldstone and we hope to obtain 3.75-meter-resolution images
using the chirp system and digital receiver.

During the time we have scheduled, the round-trip light travel time will shrink from 2.0 to 1.3 seconds
as the asteroid approaches.  Closest approach occurs several hours after the track ends.
Due to the very short round-trip times, we will transmit at DSS-14 and receive at DSS-13.  

The pointing uncertainties have improved sufficiently to observe this asteroid.  At least one
additional update to the solution is possible before the track starts.

The Doppler uncertainties are large so we're going to use a wider bandwidth
than usual for CW observations.
