Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: 2011 UW158, 1994 AW1, 1999 JD6, and 2003 NZ6
Delay-Doppler images of 2011 UW158 obtained on July 18, 2015 using DSS-14 to transmit and GBT to receive. Resolution is 7.5 m x 5 Hz. Range increases down and Doppler frequency increases to the right. The images span a little more than 1 rotation of the object. It rotates once every 36 minutes.
Delay-Doppler images of 1999 JD6 obtained on July 25, 2015 using DSS-14 to transmit and GBT to receive. Resolution is 7.5 m x 0.5 Hz. Range increases down and Doppler frequency increases to the right. Each image contains 300 sec of data. The images span 2.5 h of the object's rotation.
Delay-Doppler images of 1999 JD6 obtained on July 25, 2015 using DSS-14 to transmit and GBT to receive. Resolution is 7.5 m x 0.5 Hz for the first 10 frames and 19 m x 0.5 Hz for the rest. The images have been scaled to the same spatial range. Range increases down and Doppler frequency increases to the right. Each image contains 300 sec of data. The images span almost one full object's rotation.
This is a planning page for asteroids 2011 UW158, 1994 AW1, and 1999 JD6 in July 2015. 2011 UW158 2011 UW158 was discovered on 2011 October 25 by Pan-STARRS 1. This object has an absolute magnitude of 19.4, suggesting a diameter of roughly 450 m, but until June 2015 its physical properties were unknown. Update on 2015 June 23: Photometry reported by Bruce Gary yields a rotation period of 0.61 h, a lightcurve amplitude of 0.5 mag, and an absolute magnitude of about 20. This suggests that 2011 UW158 is elongated and the rapid rotation and fainter absolute magnitude suggest that the radar SNRs will be about 1/3 as strong as we previously estimated. Photometry reported by H.-K. Moon (pers. comm.) on July 1 confirms the 0.6 h rotation period and gives a lightcurve amplitude of 0.4 mag. More photometry reported by T. Lister (LCOGT) gives a rotation period of 0.62 h and a lightcurve amplitude of about 0.7 mag. Even with this new information, 2011 UW158 will still be a very strong radar target. This asteroid will approach within 0.0164 AU on 2015 July 19 and it will be one of the strongest radar targets of the year. The radar SNRs should be high enough to support imaging at a resolution of 3.75 m/pixel at DSS-14. We plan to observe 2011 UW158 at DSS-14, Arecibo, and probably also with Green Bank. Bistatic observations using transmissions from DSS-14 at 3.75 m resolution are likely. We will use Arecibo and Green Bank (although not simultaneously) to receive. Observations are scheduled at Goldstone from July 13-26. Arecibo observations are scheduled on July 14-17. The schedules overlap on only one day: July 17, when we hope to do bistatic DSS-14/Arecibo 3.75 m imaging. We are also planning intercontinental, bistatic CW observations using DSS-14 to transmit and the three Quasar VLBI stations in Russia to receive. This may happen during the track on July 18-19. The three Quasar stations are Svetloe (near St. Petersburg), Zelenchukskaya (Caucasus Mountains), and Badary (near Lake Baikal). 2011 UW158 been observed by the NEOWISE spacecraft on July 1 so an estimate of the diameter may become available shortly before the radar observations start. 2011 UW158 is on NASA's NHATS list of potential human mission targets. 1994 AW1 1994 AW1 is a binary system that has not yet been observed by radar. This was the first candidate binary NEA identified by possible mutual events in lightcurves (Mottola et al. 1995, Pravec and Hahn 1997). The absolute magnitude of 17.5 suggests a diameter of roughly 1 km. 1994 AW1 was discovered by K. J. Lawrence and E. F. Helin at Palomar on 1994 January 11. The primary has a low lightcurve amplitude of 0.12 mag, suggesting a shape with low elongation. The secondary has an orbital period of 22.3 h. Pravec et al. (2006) estimate a secondary/primary diameter ratio of 0.49; if correct, then the secondary could be about 0.5 km in diameter. The lightcurve observations suggest a low elongation for the secondary as well. 1994 AW1 is an S-class object. 1999 JD6 1999 JD6 will closely approach Earth in July 2015 on dates that overlap those we hope to schedule for 2011 UW158. This will be a strong radar target and we hope to get images with resolutions of 7.5 m/pixel at Goldstone. 1999 JD6 has been studied extensively and many of its physical properties are well known. It has a rotation period of 7.68 h and a lightcurve amplitude of 1.2 mag that suggests a very elongated shape. This object was observed by NASA's Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) spacecraft. Mainzer et al. (2011) used WISE data to estimate a diameter of 1.8 km and an optical albedo of 0.075, which indicates that this is a relatively dark object. Spectroscopic results have been ambiguous and this object has received multiple classifications from dark to relatively bright. There is extensive overlap between the view periods at Goldstone and Arecibo and we may attempt bistatic X-band imaging if the SNRs are sufficiently strong. We are also requesting time at Green Bank to receive transmissions from Goldstone. 1999 JD6 was observed previously by radar at Arecibo in July 2010 although at much weaker SNRs than we will obtain in 2015. 2003 NZ6 2003 NZ6 was discovered by LINEAR in July 2003. This object will approach within 0.083 au in July 2015 when it will be detectable at Goldstone although probably not at sufficiently high SNRs for imaging. The WISE mission observed this object in 2010 and Mainzer et al. (2011) reported a diameter of 0.37 km and an optical albedo of 0.33. The optical albedo is high and almost certainly rules out any of the dark spectral classes such as B, C, D, F, and P. The E, V, and Q classes are more likely. The rotation period is 13.5 h, which is relatively slow, and the lightcurve amplitude is 2 magnitudes (Polishook et al. 2005), which implies a very elongated shape. This will probably be a weak target at Goldstone so we intend to devote less time to it than to the other asteroids whose view periods occur on the same days. The Minor Planet Center has classified 2011 UW158, 1994 AW1, and 1999 JD6 as "Potentially Hazardous Asteroids."

Setups
We have information about the rotation period of each object and diameter estimates for some, so we have a good idea of the maximum bandwidths we could observe. 2011 UW158: We know the rotation period is 0.61 h, so if D = 0.32 km and if the view is close to equatorial, we should expect a bandwidth of at least 50 Hz. 1994 AW1: The primary has a rotation period of 2.52 h and a diameter of roughly 1 km, so we are expecting a bandwidth of about 40 Hz. The secondary is about 1/2 as large as the primary and it has an orbital period of 22.3 h. If the orbital and rotation periods are the same, which is likely, then the secondary's bandwidth should be about 2 Hz. 1999 JD6: The rotation period is 7.7 h, an elongated shape, an a long axis of about 1.8 km, so we're expecting a maximum bandwidth of about 23 Hz. Due to the elongation, the minimum bandwidth could be 1/2 of this. 2003 NZ6: The rotation period is 13.5 h and the diameter is about 0.37 km, so we're expecting a bandwidth between 2.5 - 3 Hz.
