2011 CP4 Goldstone Radar Observations Planning
2011 CP4 was discovered by Pan-STARRS 1 on Haleakala on February 2, 2011. Not much is known about this Aten-class Potentially Hazardous Asteroid except that its absolute magnitude of 21.2 suggests a diameter of ~180 m (within a factor of two). 2011 CP4 has a highly eccentric orbit (e = 0.87) with a perihelion of only 0.118 AU, which is well inside the orbit of Mercury and also the second smallest perihelion of any asteroid we've ever tried to observe with radar (after 2000 BD19, with q = 0.092 AU). 2011 CP4 will approach within only 9.1 lunar distances (0.023 AU) on February 23, 2012, when it will be a good radar target at Goldstone and an excellent imaging target at Arecibo. 2011 CP4 also makes frequent approaches within 10 - 30 lunar distances of Mercury and Venus. Due to its very low perihelion distance, this object may be a good test of Einstein's theory of general relativity if we can obtain radar ranging measurements. Ranging measurements are thus a high priority for this campaign. 2011 CP4 will also be a good optical target for a few days around the close approach when it brightens to about 16th magnitude. Shortly afterward it will get too close to the Sun to observe with optical telescopes. New astrometry was reported for this object on January 31, 2012 using precovery observations obtained by the JPL NEAT program in 2002 and from new measurements obtained at the Astronomical Research Observatory in Westfield, Illinois (station H21) in 2012. The new observations extended the arc from 30 days to ten years and dramatically shrank the orbital uncertainties. The pointing is now good enough for radar observations.
