Background
2007 WV4 2007 WV4 was discovered by Spacewatch in December 2007. This asteroid will approach within about 8 lunar distances on 2017 June 1 and it will be among the strongest asteroid radar targets of the year. Mainzer et al. (2011) utilized observations from the WISE spacecraft to estimate a diameter of 0.9 km and an optical albedo of 0.045, indicating that 2007 WV4 is a dark object. The NEOWISE mission also observed this asteroid in January 2017 and the astrometry shrank the pointing uncertainties by about a factor of five. The spectral class, rotation period, and pole direction are unknown. This object will be relatively close to the Sun and/or fainter than 20th magnitude until the approach, so it seems unlikely that the rotation period or spectral class will become available prior to the radar observations. We have scheduled tracks at Goldstone in late May and early June. Due to its rapid motion in declination, 2007 WV4 is visible at Arecibo on only one day: May 31. We hope to obtain images with a resolution of up to 3.75 m at Goldstone. Time is also scheduled at DSS-24, DSS-25, DSS-26, and DSS-13 for a phased array radar proof-of-concept test with this object as the target. The phased-array observations are scheduled on May 31/June 1 and June 1/2. The 2017 encounter is the closest by this asteroid for at least the last 400 years. The next flyby at least this close will occur in June 2151 at 0.0152 au (5.9 lunar distances). All of the close Earth encounters occur in late May or early June. Sky motion during time scheduled is about 121 degrees. 2007 WV4 is classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the Minor Planet Center. 2017 CS 2017 CS was discovered on 2017 Feb 2 and will approach within 8 lunar distances on May 29. Nothing is known about this object other than its absolute magnitude of 19.4, which suggests a diameter within a factor of two of 400 meters. Update on March 9: Petr Pravec obtained a calibrated absolute magnitude of 19.48 and BVRI colors that suggest an optically-dark spectral class. It seems likely that 2017 CS is at least several tens of percent larger than 0.4 km and thus that the SNRs will be significantly stronger than indicated below. Update on April 9: Photometric results from Petr Pravec give a rotation period of 40.34+-0.02 h with a lightcurve amplitude of 0.18. This increases the SNRs by another factor of about 1.4 relative to previous estimates. The close approach and diameter indicate that this object will be an outstanding radar target with signal-to-noise ratios strong enough for imaging at 3.75 m resolution in late May. If all goes well, radar observations at Goldstone could yield images that place thousands of pixels on the asteroid and be suitable for estimation of a detailed 3D model. Due to the strong SNRs, some of the observations on the strongest days will be bistatic with transmissions at DSS-14 and reception at DSS-13. We would be interested in doing bistatic observations with Arecibo if this object were scheduled there. Sky motion during time scheduled is about 116 degrees. 2017 CS is classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the Minor Planet Center. 6063 Jason Jason was discovered with the 18 inch Schmidt telescope at Palomar by Carolyn and Gene Shoemaker on May 27, 1984. Jason is about 1.4 km in diameter and it has an unusally slow rotation period of 51.7 hours. The lightcurve amplitude is 0.5 mag so the shape is probabaly elongated. This is an S- or Sq-class object with an optical albedo of 0.16 that is close to the average for those spectral groups. Jason will approach within 0.064 au in late May when it will be a radar imaging target at Goldstone. We hope to obtain images with a resolution at least as fine as 0.25 usec. Sky motion during the time scheduled is about 69 degrees.Orbital and Physical Characteristics Provisional Designation 2007 WV4 2017 CS Jason Number 418094 not numbered 6063 Discoverer Spacewatch 691 Pan-STARRS 1 C.S. and E.M.
