2007 DT103 Planning
2007 DT103 was discovered by the Mt. Lemmon Survey (University of Arizona) on February 26, 2007. It will approach within 0.0238 AU (9.3 lunar distances) on July 29 when it will be a strong radar imaging target. Its physical properties are unknown, but its absolute magnitude of 19.5 suggests a diameter within a factor of two of 0.4 km. If past experience is a guide, then there is a ~1/6 chance that it is a binary system. Goldstone observations are scheduled on July 26, 28, and August 1. Observations at Arecibo are not currently scheduled due to maintenance on the platform. On July 28, we will start with ten minutes of CW transmitting 8560 MHz + 200 Hz as part of an international experiment in collaboration with Igor Molotov and colleagues, who will attempt to receive our echoes at Evpatoria (Ukraine), Kalyazin (Russia), Noto (Italy), Medicina (Italy), and Urumqi (China). Molotov et al. plan independent observations transmitting at Evpatoria and receiving at the other stations on that day and on July 29 and 31. We intend to devote most of our time on July 28 and August 1 (the strongest days) to testing the chirp/digital receiver system. We do not plan to test the chirp system on July 26 due to the weaker SNRs. This object will brighten to about 14th magnitude in early August, when it will be a good target for photometric, spectroscopic, and thermal infrared observations. Due to the proximity of its orbit to Earth and its diameter, 2007 DT103 has been classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the Minor Planet Center. These observations would not have been possible without the help of observers at many stations who kindly responded to our request for astrometry in late March-July 2007. Plans for the August 1 track:
WE WILL START WITH SOLUTION 41
On August 1 we'll start with about ten minutes of frequency-hopped CW observations
using the following setup:
CW setup for the August 1 track
-------------------------------
TX polarization RCP
RCV polarization LCP & RCP
Frequency hops: 2
Dwell 10 seconds
Transmit offset NONE
Bandwidth: 4000 Hz
Sampling interval: 2500 x 0.1 usec
VME FFT for PSD files: 16384 for 0.24-Hz resolution
After we get CW echoes, we'll switch to 1/8 usec imaging, and then
0.1 usec (10 MHz) chirping.
Here's the 1/8 usec imaging setup we'll use:
