2006 RZ Planning

Background

2006 RZ was discovered by Helmut Michels at Herrenberg Observatory (Germany) on September 4, 2006.
It will approach within 0.0129 AU (4.9 lunar distances) on October 7. Its physical properties
are unknown, but its absolute magnitude of 20.1 suggests a diameter within a factor of two of
300 meters. Using past experience as a guide, there is a 1/6 chance that it is a binary.

Update: Observations by Michael Hicks at JPL's Table Mountain Observatory have revealed that
2006 RZ has photometric colors consistent with a dark C-type object. If so, then this asteroid may be
significantly larger than estimated below, and thus the signal-to-noise ratios could be considerably
stronger.

Photometry by B. Warner (Palmer Divide Observatory), P. Kusnirak (Ondrejov Observatory), and
and M. Hicks show that this asteroid is a rapid rotator, with the most likely periods being either
2.48 or 4.96 hours. The lightcurve amplitude is about 0.2 magnitudes, suggesting a shape
with only modest elongation.

Goldstone images on October 4 revealed that 2006 RZ has a somewhat angular leading edge, suggest
its elongation is low, and that its diameter is roughly 600 meters. The size and shape are consistent
with the colors obtained by Hicks and the lightcurve amplitudes obtained by Warner, Kusnirak,
and Hicks.

Goldstone observations are scheduled on October 4 and 5.
Arecibo observations are scheduled on October 2, 7, and 9.

Due to the proximity of its orbit to Earth and its diameter, 2006 RZ has been classified as a
"Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the Minor Planet Center.

The rise-set times for Arecibo have been corrected to actual values and a transmitter power
of 80 kW was adopted.

Note that RAs and DECs apply to zero hours UTC on each day; they're somewhat
different during Arecibo view periods after October 7.

the 1 delay and 1 Doppler Mike reported from Arecibo, solution #32 was
computed. Formal 3-sigma S & X-band uncertainties are below.

Setups

Plans for the second track
-------------------------
We will start with solution 32 again.

The echoes on Oct. 4 were drifting in range, so we need to update the
ephemeris. Let's start the Oct. 5 track with 10 usec and 11 usec
ranging. If we have time during the first hour, we'll stay with
solution 32 and do some 1/8 usec imaging.

During the 90 minute stand-down, I'll generate a new ephemeris and
we'll used it after we come back up at 0515 UT. Our top priority
will be 1/8 usec imaging, so we aren't going to do any CW observations
on October 5.

The October 5 imaging setup will be the same one we used on October 4,
except that I'd like to try a 512-length FFT with the PFS.
