2005 RC34 Goldstone Radar Observations Planning

Background

2005 RC34 was discovered the Catalina Sky Survey (University of Arizona)
on December 21, 2003. It will approach within 0.0424 AU (16.5 lunar distances)
on July 13 and it should be a strong radar target.

With an absolute magnitude of 19.5, 2005 RC34 has a diameter that is probably
within a factor of two of 0.4 km. Otherwise, we know nothing about its physical
properties. Given recent experience, there's a a ~1/6 chance that it's a binary system.

Goldstone observations are scheduled on four tracks during July 19, 21, 22, and 23.
Arecibo observations are scheduled on July 19-22, starting several hours before
the first Goldstone track.

2005 RC34 will brighten to about 14th magnitude in July
when it will be a good target for lightcurves and spectroscopy.

Due to its diameter and the proximity of its orbit to Earth, this asteroid has been
classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the Minor Planet Center.

On July 19, we have time at Goldstone for both 2005 RC34 and 2003 YE45. We intend
to observe both asteroids during the track.

We have time at both Goldstone and Arecibo on July 19, 21, and 22
but the times do not overlap.
