2005 EU2 Planning

Background

2005 EU2 was discovered by the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona on March 4, 2005.
It will approach within 0.016 AU (6.2 lunar distances) on April 5. Its physical
properties are unknown but its absolute magnitude of 22.7 suggests a diameter within a
factor of two of 0.1 km.

Goldstone images obtained on April 1 suggest a diameter that is close to 300 meters and
a rotation period of roughly 3-4 hours.
These will be combined Goldstone and Arecibo observations.
Goldstone observations are scheduled on April 1 and April 2/3, and
Arecibo observations are scheduled on March 26/27, 27/28, April 2, 3, 10, and 13.

New Goldstone tracks have been added on April 5-6, 7-8, and 9-10 through the help of
Tim Gregor, Mike Klein, and Tom Kuiper, who graciously relinquished their time so
we could observe 2005 EU2.

Prior to the radar observations, 2005 EU2 had several "virtual impactors" during the
2070s-2090s that had low probabilities of impacting Earth. Radar astrometry
has significantly improved the orbit and has shown that 2005 EU2 cannot impact Earth
during the interval over which the orbit can be reliably integrated. Stated in other words,
JPL maintains a "Sentry" website (http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/risk/) that lists potential impactors.
Now, due to radar observations, 2005 EU2 has been removed from that list.
