Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: (357439) 2004 BL86
2004 BL86 will approach within 0.0080 AU (3.1 lunar distances) on January 26, 2015. Although little is known about this asteroid, its absolute magnitude of 18.9 suggests a diameter within factor of two of ~0.5 km. The encounter will be the closest known by an object this large until 1999 AN10 approaches within one lunar distance in 2027. The radar signal-to-noise ratios will be very strong and will provide an extraordinary opportunity to study this object. We plan to observe this asteroid with the highest resolutions currently available: 3.75 m using transmissions from DSS-14 and possibly 1.875 m using transmissions from DSS-13 if the new imaging capability at DSS-13 is available by late January. The resulting images could approach the level of detail visible from spacecraft flybys. The asteroid will approach from the south and enter the beam at Goldstone on January 26. Goldstone observations are scheduled on Jan. 26, 27, 28, 30, 31, and Feb. 1. Arecibo observations are scheduled on Jan. 27, the only day when this object is within Arecibo's declination range. We will also use Arecibo and Green Bank to receive DSS-14 transmissions at 3.75 m resolution and the VLBA to to conduct radar speckle observations. We plan to receive Goldstone transmissions at Arecibo on Jan. 27 and at Green Bank on Jan. 27 and 28. If the new transmitter at DSS-13 is ready, we hope to transmit to Green Bank on Jan. 27. The radar SNRs will drop rapidly after the closest approach as the asteroid's distance grows. Recent lightcurves reported by J. Pollock and P. Pravec suggest a rotation period of ~5 h or 2.6 h with a modest lightcurve amplitude of 0.25, which is consistent with a shape that has a relatively low aspect ratio. The pole direction, spectral class, and diameter are unknown. We hoped that NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) spacecraft might observe 2004 BL86 in October 2014 and provide an estimate of the diameter and optical albedo, but WISE did not detect it. On January 26-27, 2004 BL86 will reach visual magnitude 9 (!) for several hours when it should be visible in small telescopes. This will be one of the brightest near-Earth asteroids to date. At the closest approach, the asteroid will move 2.7 deg/hour (about 5.4x the width of the Moon) and its motion relative to background stars will be obvious in small telescopes. The asteroid will be brightest at about 04:00 UT on Jan. 27 (8 pm PST on the night of Jan. 26) when it will be in the constellation Cancer and close to the Beehive cluster. 2004 BL86 will provide a nice opportunity for public outreach and star parties because the asteroid will be visible relatively early in the night for observers across North America. A NASA press release is available at: http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?feature=4441 . An updated release from NASA's NEO program office, including finder charts, is available at: http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news188.html A detailed finder chart is available on p. 50 of the February 2015 issue of Sky and Telescope magazine and online at: http://www.skyandtelescope.com/astronomy-news/observing-news/asteroid-2004-bl86-01222015/ The approach will be close enough that it could be possible to use parallax to measure the asteroid's distance. Astrometry reported in Dec. 2014 and Jan. 2015 has reduced the pointing uncertainties considerably and been very helpful. Thank you to everyone who has contributed! The Minor Planet Center has classified 2004 BL86 as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid."

If the rotation period is 2.6 h, as hinted by the lightcurves, then the bandwidth could be ~20 Hz. The 3-sigma Doppler uncertainties at the beginning of the track on Jan. 26 are ~50 Hz, so we'll start with a standard CW setup: CW setup: --------------------------------------------------------------------------- TX polarization RCP RCV polarization LCP & RCP Frequency hops: no hopping Bandwidth: 5000 Hz TXoffset +500 Hz Sampling interval: 2000 x 0.1 usec FFT for PFS files: 5000 for 1.0 Hz resolution Ranging setups: --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10-usec baud 10 usec code 127 PRP 1270 usec FFT 128 ncoh 1 bandwidth 787.4 Hz resolution 6.15 Hz TXoffset +100 Hz (echo in column 80) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11-usec baud 11 usec code 127 PRP 1397 usec FFT 128 ncoh 1 bandwidth 715.8 Hz resolution 5.59 Hz TXoffset +100 Hz (echo in column 82) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1-usec baud 1 usec code 255 FFT 256 ncoh 4 bandwidth 980.4 Hz resolution 3.82 Hz TXoffset +100 Hz (echo in column 154) --------------------------------------------------------------------- 1/4 usec baud 0.25 usec code 255 ncoh 200 bandwidth 78.4 Hz FFT 256 resolution 0.306 Hz TXoffset +15 Hz (echo in column 128 + 49 = 177) --------------------------------------------------------------------- 1/8 usec baud 0.125 usec code 127 ncoh 1200 bandwidth 52.5 Hz FFT 256 resolution 0.205 Hz TXoffset +13 Hz ---------------------------------------------------------------------
