Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: Asteroids 2003 TL4 and 2003 YT1
This is a planning page for Goldstone radar observations of near-Earth asteroids 2003 TL4 and 2003 YT1. Radar observations are scheduled between October 19-November 6. 2003 TL4 2003 TL4 was discovered by LINEAR in October 2003. Spitzer Space Telescope observations reported by Trilling et al. (2010) give a diameter of 0.38 km and an optical albedo of 0.22. The spectral class is not known. Photometry reported by P. Pravec indicates a slow rotation period of 27.2 hours and a lightcurve amplitude of 1.0 magnitudes, strongly suggesting that this object is very elongated. The slow rotation is consistent with non-principal axis rotation. 2003 TL4 was observed with radar at Goldstone and Arecibo in 2003. Images obtained at 0.125 usec x 0.0625 Hz resolution strongly suggest that this object is an elongated contact binary. The bandwidth observed at Goldstone was about 1 Hz and the circular polarization ratio was 0.30 +- 0.03. This asteroid will approach at about 10 lunar distances on October 27 when it will be a very strong radar target at both Goldstone and Arecibo. We hope to image it at 3.75 m resolution at Goldstone and 7.5 m resolution at Arecibo. We have requested time on several days at Goldstone and time is scheduled on October 19-23. This object is observable on only four days at Arecibo between October 27-30. Bistatic Goldstone/Green Bank observations are also possible. Due to the lengthy arc of optical astrometry, the orbit for this object is very good. On October 28, there will be a phased array radar test to observe this object with DSS-24 and DSS-25 transmitting 20 kW each at 7190 MHz with reception at DSS-13. This proof-of-concept test will not use the GSSR waveform generators or datataking computers. 2003 TL4 is classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the Minor Planet Center. 2003 YT1 2003 YT1 was discovered by the Catalina Sky Survey in December 2003. This asteroid will approach within 0.035 au (13.5 lunar distances) on October 31. Radar observations at Arecibo in May 2004 revealed that this is a binary system with a rapidly-rotating primary and a secondary whose orbital and rotation periods appear to be asynchronous. The primary has a rotation period of 2.34 h and the upper bound on the rotation period of the secondary is about 6 h. The Arecibo images reveal that the primary has an equatorial bulge and that pole-on silhouette of the equatorial region is not strictly circular. The secondary has an orbital eccentricity of about 0.2 and a semimajor axis of about 7 primary radii (Fang and Margot 2012). The diameters of the primary and secondary are about 1.1 and 0.2 km, results (for the primary at least) that are consistent with estimates from infrared observations reported by Mainzer et al. (2011) and Delbo et al. (2011). Fang and Margot report a system mass of about 2 x 10^12 kg and a semimajor axis of 3.93 +1.47-0.13 km. The orbital period has not been reported. 3D models of both components are not available, so we do not have a precise estimate for the bulk density of the system. Spectroscopy reported by Abell et al. (pers. comm., 2005), Sanchez et al. (2013), and Thomas et al. (2014) indicates that this is a basaltic, V-class object. There are also reports that this could be in the S (E. S. Howell, pers. comm.) or R (Hicks et al. 2009) classes. The 2004 Arecibo radar observations yielded a very high circular polarization ratio of 0.61 +- 0.06 that is consistent with the high ratios seen for all the other V-class NEAs. This ratio is somewhat higher than values observed to date for S-class objects. The infrared observations suggest an optical albedo of almost 0.5, which is consistent with a basaltic composition but rather high for the S- or R-classes. 2003 YT1 will be a very strong radar target in late October and early November. We plan an extensive imaging campaign at Goldstone and three days of imaging at Arecibo. We also hope to receive Goldstone transmissions at Green Bank on some days. 2003 YT1 is classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the Minor Planet Center.
