Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: (215588) 2003 HF2 and 2017 FV
215588 2003 HF2 2003 HF2 was discovered by LONEOS on April 24, 2003. It is classified as a Potentially Hazardous Asteroid (PHA) by the Minor Planet Center and will make a close approach to Earth at 0.0427 au on March 28, 2017. NEOWISE observations yielded a diameter of about 500 meters but its spin period is unknown. If we assuming a spin period of 2.1 hours and an equatorial view, then we can expect the bandwidth of the radar echo to be about 25 Hz. Time delay uncertainties during the time of radar observations are currently about 2 milliseconds. We expect to obtain delay measurements of the asteroid with 1 microsecond precision. The estimated signal-to-noise ratios suggest that we should be able to image the object with 37.5 m/pixel range resolution. Four tracks are scheduled at Goldsotne between March 26-31 and six tracks are scheduled at Arecibo during the same dates. 2017 FV 2017 FV is a target-of-opportunity that should be detectable during the final track scheduled for 2003 HF2. This asteroid has an absolute magnitude of 24.3 that suggests a diameter within a factor of two of 50 meters but otherwise we know nothing about it. It was discovered on March 17 by the Mt. Lemmon Survey. 2017 FV is an Apollo-class object that will approach within 0.0232 au on April 2. This object could be relatively weak and we do not expect signal-to-noise ratios strong enough for imaging.
