(153958) 2002 AM31 Goldstone Radar Observations Planning

Background

(153958) 2002 AM31 was discovered by LINEAR in New Mexico on January 14, 2002.
2002 AM31 will flyby Earth at a distance of 0.035 AU (14 lunar distances) on July 22, 2012.

It will be a strong radar target at Goldstone and we expect to use the chirp system at
resolutions as fine as 0.1 usec (10 meters). Nine tracks are scheduled at Goldstone
and four are scheduled at Arecibo, where this object will be a very strong imaging target with
SNRs sufficient for imaging at 0.05 usec (7.5 meter) resolution.

Recently Michael Hicks et al. reported (pers. comm.) that 2002 AM31 is a basaltic, V-class
object. If we adopt an optical albedo of 0.4 typical of that spectral class, then the
absolute magnitude of 18.2 suggests that the diameter will be roughly 0.5 km.
Ellen Howell (Arecibo Observatory) has reported that 2002 AM31 is an Sq-class object.
Arecibo imaging on July 11 and 12 revealed that this object is about 0.3 km in diameter
and that it has an unusually high radar albedo of about 0.4.

Information about the rotation period is starting to become available: evidently the
period is close to 3.4 hours (Brian Warner, pers. comm.) and the lightcurve amplitude
is low (Joe Pollock and Petr Pravec, pers. comm.), suggesting that the shape has a
low elongation.

2002 AM31 will brighten to about 14th magnitude in the third week of June when it will be a good
target for photometry and spectroscopy.

2002 AM31 has been classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the Minor Planet Center.

This is the next opportunity to observe 2002 AM31 with radar until July of 2032 when the asteroid
will approach within a similar distance from Earth.

Horizons were set = 25 degrees (instead of the usual value of 20 deg) because otherwise
this object is circumpolar on some dates, precluding estimation of the SNRs by our software.

Goldstone SNRs assume Ptx = 450 kW

After July 16 this object moves too far north for Arecibo to track until it moves south into
Arecibo's declination window on August 2. At that time 2002 AM31 will still be a strong radar imaging
target at Arecibo, and three tracks have been added to the schedule.

Sky motion during July 12-29, dates that encompass all the tracks at Goldstone and Arecibo,
will be about 98 degrees, so there could be substantial movement in subradar latitude and we may
see significant changes in the bandwidth throughout the observations.

Uncertainties

From Jon Giorgini, 2012 July 30:

Including the last delay measurement from DSS-14 (Jul 27) with
recent optical (425 measurements 2001-Dec-16 to 2012-Jul-29),
153958 (2002 AM31) orbit solution #65 was estimated and updated
into the Arecibo /a153958 sub-directory for the upcoming tracks.

From Jon Giorgini, 2012 July 3:

Given the existing 255 optical measurements (1983-May-7 to 2012-Jun-30),
153958 (2002 AM31) orbit solution #51 was estimated and OSOD with nominal
radar predicts for DSS-14 and Areicbo established in the /a153958
sub-directories.
