2000 YA Goldstone Radar Observations Planning

Background

2000 YA was discovered on December 16, 2000 by the Lowell Observatory-LONEOS program.
This asteroid is coming within 3 lunar distances of Earth on Dec. 26, 2011 and it will be an excellent radar
target for both Goldstone and Arecibo. 2000 YA was previously observed with Arecibo in December of 2000.
Imaging at 15-m resolution revealed that the visible extent of 2000 YA is ~60m. Arecibo images also
revealed that the object is moderately elongated and irregular. Both radar and photometric observations
established that 2000 YA has a period of 0.67 hours. This very short rotation period indicates that
2000 YA has cohesive strength and that it may be a monolith

The pointing and Doppler uncertainties that were very large shrank dramatically with acquisition
of new optical astrometry at stations G96 (Nov. 30) and F65 (Dec. 02). Pointing is no longer
a problem for this object.

Goldstone observations are scheduled on Dec. 23, 24, 26, 27, and 28 and chirp observations
are planned on Dec. 24, 26, and 27.
Arecibo observations are scheduled on Dec. 23 and 27.

The expected bandwidth at Goldstone is 15-20 Hz. Due to the rapid rotation, we will use relatively
short image integrations (~60 s) to avoid excessive rotational smear.

From Jon Giorgini, 2011 Dec 18:

A couple more days of data has dropped uncertainties to about 1/3
of initial-setup s31 values.

With 135 optical measurements (2000-Dec-16 to 2011-Dec-17)
1 delay and 3 Doppler from Arecibo (2000), 2000 YA orbit solution
#35 was computed.
